Involvement should be a pre-requisite, no other city has as many advisory councils and commissions as APS and pretty much anyone who volunteers can get appointed. There's no reason to not get involved with one of those if you "care about the schools"--you don't have to start with the board. Plus, "the relevant skills" at the board level should include knowing how a school system works--having gone to public school for 12 years or having kids in the schools does not give you any special competency. It used to be pretty standard that candidates would have experience on the instruction, facilities, or budget committees and be active in a PTA or BLPC or something.

According to this article the Fishtahler guy used to be the president of the County Council of PTAs and was co-chairman of the school system’s Advisory Council on Instruction. If he's been subbing at schools since then he's been pretty involved.

Plus yeah having a kid in the system doesn't mean anything; I'm pretty sure they all have kids in APS.

As a teacher I'm just going to put this out there if you care about experience:

Fishtahler:
-former president of the County Council of PTAs
-former co-chairman of the school system’s Advisory Council on Instruction
-long term sub at my school

Kathleen:
-6 years of solid Special Ed advocacy

Zuraya:
-???

Chen:
-???

None of this means anything if you’re not helping them get votes. DCUM doesn’t count.

I believe he's the APE candidate without saying he's the APE candidate. So I'm not voting for him.

I am replying to both threads. Someone pointed me to both threads on this forum (which predate me commenting on either one), so I'm replying when I can.

If you have a specific question -- please ask.

Perhaps I'm naive, but I'm not sure what it even means to be the "APE candidate". I know their origins, but at this point they are one of the few groups that attend board meetings and go through proposals and try to extract useful information from them. I've met with their president. I've also met with the the AEA, various PTAs, principals, parents, SEPTA, etc. I think every group has a right to a voice, and if they have good ideas I'm not going to discount them because of whether I agree or disagree with their overall aims.

I encourage everyone to vote -- whether you vote for me or not -- our public schools are too important to just discuss on forums. Turnout last year was abysmal. I will work to make sure that the community is engaged, and to make APS as successful as it can be.

If you have any direction questions, please email me at info@chen4arlington.org. Thanks!

I am quite active in one of the groups Chen claimed to meet with by name, and no, he did not meet with us.

May I ask which group? I don't think I've claimed to meet with any group I haven't met with. If you wish, email me directly at chen@chen4arlington.org.

PLEASE consider the old man, he got the AEA endorsement where they look at PLANS. Also I remember his name and he used to work at LULAC, I'm telling you he might be legit. Also no disrespect to Kathleen she's my #2 pick but I took off the last two bullets (all of them have kids that are in or went thru APS, and all of them are advocates of something)

The AEA PAC (very different from the regular org) is a joke. Every teacher knows that or they’re not paying attention. I’’m hoping ATU will do endorsements. There a few other very involved teachers and parents whose opinions I value and they all uniformly say KC is #1 choice. Yet the AEA passed her over. I had hoped the endorsement for Angelo last year was an anomaly but NOPE now I see they should just be ignored. Or even better do the opposite.

Ypu sound so bitter but maybe I'm overreading it. But if we have two votes why not send the two most qualified people to the school board? That can include KC. I just don't want to see someone who doesn't know what they're doing get the position. Does the ATU do endorsements?

DP. AEA endorsements were awful. skipping over Kathleen for Zuraya who knows nothing about the position.

No all of them are not advocates for something. Kathleen has been advocating to stop bullying and for keeping the county's behavioral services program. That's just two that I've seen in the news. She has been doing this for YEARS.

I didn't have much respect for the AEA but now I have lost any last shred of it. Anyone with a pulse can see that Kathleen is the most qualified candidate by a mild. I guess I can see the teachers endorsing one of their own with larry being a sub, but Zuraya????

Maybe the AEA PAC doesn't want someone who will actually ask the hard questions?

All I'm getting out of this is that there are two candidates with experience and who actually care enough about schools to have been involved in them.

Good thing I have two votes.

Send Larry and Kathleen to the SB. Or am I missing something?

They recorded it so it will be available on their youtube page (https://www.youtube.com/@NAACPArlington) hopefully in the next couple of days. I tuned in and found it to be well organized, professional and I think was a great look at the candidates.
