He/we got psyched out by all the chatter about kids getting screwed, and became fixed on doing ED at Chicago. Fast-forward, all his friends with similar profiles got into excellent schools- not everyone got into an Ivy, but I can only think of one kid who got "screwed" (and maybe he'll get off a waitlist in the next 6 weeks, who knows). DC should have held out instead of compromising with ED! Wish I'd tried harder to talk him out of it. Chicago is obviously not a terrible school, but the quarter system sucks, it's in a horrible neighborhood, and it's stressful. I feel certain he would have had East Coast options if he'd waited. So, rising senior parent, learn the lesson from us.

So the lesson is ED to a school you actually like. This is a you problem.

So the lesson is that the son obviously warmed up to UChicago and was satisfied with his ED admission while pushy domineering parent did not get their way.

Yale should not even be in the discussion, since you live on campus all 4 years. You live off campus 2 years at Chicago and, no, you don’t live on the obama’s mansion street. It’s doable but sketchy. Let’s not pretend.“

More gaslighting by commenters that have NO facts about UChicago’s very livable and eclectic Hyde Park Kenwood neighborhood. None. And, “no, you don’t live on obama’s mansion street.” The Obama’s are a prime example of all income levels and races living side-by-side in diverse Hyde Park Kenwood. The Obama family when he was state senator lived in their 5300 square foot mansion a stone’s throw, literally a couple hundred feet, from working class and STUDENT 4 story walk-up apartments built in the 1920’s. Michelle worked for UChicago and their daughters attended UChicago Lab School just like thousands of other UChicago faculty and staff. Their home was also across the street from a thriving synagogue as well. That is diverse and far from “sketchy” Hyde Park Kenwood. Fact.

UChicago has its own private police force for a reason.

Students literally get mugged at gunpoint there. Your kid messed up. If he could have gotten into any of the Ivies he would be better off.

Safety wise that is.

Hhhmmm…gaslighting…like YOU. UPenn has a private police force of 121 officers.

https://www.publicsafety.upenn.edu/about/uppd/

UChicago has a large private police force as well. Also, fact that the majority of UChicago faculty live and raise their families in the adjoining neighborhoods of Hyde Park Kenwood UNLIKE most Penn faculty who do not live close by Penn. Is street smarts needed on elite urban university campuses like Penn, UChicago, Columbia, NYU, USC and Johns Hopkins? Sure. But Hyde Park Kenwood is very livable as UChicago faculty and familes residing there know very well. So your fear gaslighting about UChicago is a pile of manure.

Tossing in several private research universities that are in the same D3 athletic conference as UChicago, WashU, NYU and Emory including Brandeis U, Case Western and URochester. All three have acceptance rates close to 40% but high median SATs. Meh weather in the winter for Case and URochester with lake effect snow and gray. But the academics are outstanding. And Case is in the vibrant University Circle section of Cleveland. I attended both Carnegie Mellon and UChicago before they got blazingly hot for admissions so look beyond the usual suspects for gems. Case Western and URochester are peers or better than Tulane regarding student outcomes but much less difficult to gain entry.

The problem is he low-balled himself in ED. He shoulda ED at the Columbia/Penn/Brown level.

Chicago far superior to Brown

Chicago has ED2 because people don’t choose it. It’s in a crappy area. It’s not a fun place. It’s a back up to the Ivies—except for those who are afraid they won’t get in anywhere RD —so they ED at Uchi for a sure thing. U Chicago is test optional and they have to actively recruit by sending mailers constantly—so much wasted paper from all of their soliciting solely to raise the number of applicants to skew their numbers. The Ivies don’t have to send out mailers. It’s popular at one Big3 that’s like a feeder to it, but not at most other privates.

UChicago “it’s a back-up to the Ivies” has student outcomes that rival all the Ivies including 99% return rate for first year students; 91% grad rate in 4 years and 96% grad rate in six years. And per US News a top 3 law school, top 4 grad business school, shared #1 Economics department and EVERY other academic department in the top 5 to 10. UChicago equals or exceeds every Ivy by any measurable standard.

Bingo.

Quarter system is fun actually.
Chicago is better than any east coast city.
If your kid is happy, don’t rain on his parade.

Quarter system sucks for jobs/internships

At UChicago the intenship programs are phenomenal, especially with the Metcalf Internships that pay students even if they take a no-pay internship.
“Chicago is obviously not a terrible school, but the quarter system sucks, it's in a horrible neighborhood, and it's stressful. I feel certain he would have had East Coast options if he'd waited. So, rising senior parent, learn the lesson from us.”

Goodness. As a working class kid who was first gen to college and whose parents had no idea about college rankings, I am so glad not to have my decision to attend and graduate from UChicago sabotaged by a parent like you.

“Not a terrible school”…UChicago College has 99% of first year students returning for the second year; 91% graduate in 4 years and 96% in 6 years. UChicago College is a target for the top investment banking and consulting firms. Results better than a number of the Ivies.

And continuing “not terrible” UChicago has per US News rankings a top 3 law school; top 4 grad business school; shared #1 ranking Economics department and ALL academic departments in the top 5 or 10 in their respective fields whether science, humanities or social sciences.

“It’s in a horrible neighborhood” - The majority of the UChicago faculty have chosen to live and raise their families in Hyde Park Kenwood (the adjacent University neighborhoods). And Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods Market are thriving there. Yes, street smarts are required as a student but “horrible neighborhood” au contraire.

Late to the party, but from description of your child’s diverse interests including scientific research and humanities, my alma mater, UChicago, may be a consideration. “She wants to solve problems with science.” That IS UChicago. But if she changes her mind from the sciences as an undergrad and wants to get rich, UChicago College as a target for investment banking and consulting firms can make that happen too. Scientific bent but a creative writing scratch to itch, that is UChicago too. Virtually every academic department in the top ten nationally per US News rankings whether in the sciences, social sciences or humanities. In the last few years UChicago has established molecular engineering majors, but does not have traditional engineering.
