I assume this has to do with their Brookland FC merger?

Are you saying lacrosse isn't a DMV thing???

Thanks. We did a Labor Day tournament there in 2021 and yeah, it was a mess. He is in the U-middles now so we are Glenelg HS and a place called the Moose Athletic Club near BWI.

Hurrah! Mine is now U-Big, and though we're playing almost in Baltimore, I couldn't be happier. I never want to see that place again!
lorax44 wrote:Too funny, we are actually from Bryc, they arent hosting the tournament. They are playing in FPYC's tournament like we do every year. It is always Fathers Day weekend, just Sat and Sun.

The other tournament is being run by Valor and they don't have rec soccer, they are just all travel, but running a rec all star tournament, also on Fathers Day weekend. They are really close by to FPYC.

I have never seen the coaches also refereeing in an all star tournament! That sounds nuts. They charge a lot to participate presumably to cover ref fees and still make a profit.

Looks like they align themselves with CYA and SYA, so likely marketing it there. https://www.virginiavalorfc.org/grassroots-soccer. Sounds like they are planning on a very big event! And yeah, that's a lot for a rec tourney. But most other travel seasons are done by then, so more ref availability.

FPYC is great fun for the kids (though tbh, the dad coaches probably enjoy it at least as much).

Looks like BRYC is on father's day -- smart. Sounds like they thought it was a great idea!

Why is a travel org holding a rec all star tournament at all and why are they having it the same weekend as FPYC's rec all star tournament, which is every year on the same weekend? It seems like they would be directly competing for fields, refs, and teams. We are participating in FPYC like usual but I am hoping the older girls teams still have decent competition and have not been deluted between the two options.

Also, to better answer your questions:
1) Travel clubs usually have a rec component, and its also a great way to get more exposure and/or identify new talent. They also might just not care about competing dates - its hard to find a long weekend or time just after school ends to do this stuff.
2) IME rec tournaments and games are often refereed by coaches, so its possible to fill in any reffing holes as needed.
I don't know about these two events, but there are often multiple tournaments the same weekend in the same area, and generally on long weekends, so they have an extra day to play. Clubs may also split their teams among more than one tournament. Also, some clubs may host a tournament, and yet some of their own teams may be playing elsewhere on the same weekend.

There is a ton of demand for fields and refs, of course, but everyone needs the extra day that memorial day provides.

NWDC/Bethesda Generally. Anywhere from as far south as GW soccer fields off Foxhall road to north bethesda. There’s no predicting it, as fighting for field space with all the other dc teams means you never know what you will get.

(One good thing is that if you can’t make a practice in one place/time, you can generally come to another similar teams practice instead).
Absolutely depends on the coach. BSC has a tried and true method, but being on their lowest levels will mean the bottom of a stiff pecking order.

PPA is less established but the experience will vary depending on the coach. They have a general policy of starting all new-to-the-club players on their lower teams, but the upside is that they are on the lookout for standouts as they year progresses- so the top coaches are actually paying some attention to the lower level teams. But it can also suck if you get a weak coach.

I have no SAC experience.

Also- go with what is convenient!
My experience suggests that this is not the case, particularly at BSC, unless you are prepared to do a lot of outside training. And if you do wind up on ECNL2, you will still be on a second team- and it feels like it. That said, BSC will give her a good soccer foundation for sure.
The other nice things about MSI Classic league is that it’s grade based, not age based. So the kids can play together with their school classmates, and not have the kids with fall birthdays excluded. It’s a nice fit for a lot of kids.
Sure- lots of lower level clubs like this use Sam select or MSI for their teams. Good option if you are looking for more instruction and a more cohesive atmosphere vs. rec.
soccermom316 wrote:OP. This was super depressing to read! Lol. So my 8 year old is already out of luck for a "good" team? That is insane. I did ask Arlington if they would do any other tryout dates (only offered one date), and they said no more for this year and encouraged us to do the ADP tryout. DS is legitimately a good player with a lot of drive and is easy to coach because he wants to get better, but he's also...8.

It depends what you consider to be a "good" team. If you are trying to get him to MLS Next, then ADP probably isn't your best bet. But if your goal is to have him learn skills, play with friends, and have a great experience, then it doesn't matter. As you said, he's only 8. Have him do ADP and see how he likes it - it sounds like the right fit. There are a million great soccer programs around here-- but on these threads, you tend to get people saying anything other than ECNL/MLS is rec. ( )
goaliemomnova wrote:Interesting on Arlington. My youngest son was not invited back for an extra look but did receive an offer for the gold team. Ironically, he has not yet received offers from Alexandria or SYC -- am I crazy to turn down the opportunity to get into Arlington as we got a coveted spot and he is a strong player and most likely would move up within?

Arlington is a challenge as we are Alexandria based and my oldest is most likely moving from Alexandria to another club this year. Any idea what fields U10 Arlington typically practice on and timing as that changes what I can and can't do?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

I would not make yourself insane going to Arlington if Alexandria is easier and closer. Where is your oldest going?
