Thanks!
Children in aspergers program have more support than in autism resource service?

I thought it was the opposite because students in ARS have also learning difficulties.
I contacted xminds I'll talk to them next week. One of the board member has his child in ARS in the middle school we might be assigned. I could benefit from her experience.

If the criteria for aspergerd program is being at least on level I don't think it will work for my kid but I'm taking my time to do the best choice.
No sorry.
Hi,

After some search I don't think aspergers program will be a good fit for my child. He's not on level, autism resource service or more accomodations will be better but I need to learn more first. Thanks,
I see. Thanks!

But, they interviewed us (the parents), reviewed my child's testing, attended IEP meetings, went to school to do observations, called in other school administrators on our behalf, recommend further testing, etc... they spent hours on our case. We ultimately prevailed in getting the outcome we wanted... but it wasn't cheap and it wasn't quick.

That is the process and you are guaranteed nothing. But, I found that the advocate understood my child's needs and didn't let the school get away with railroading us into accepting minimal services when my child needed more.

Is the advocate in Montgomery county?

If yes can I have his/her website link please?
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Hi,

After searching which program could benefit my middle schooler I think ARS might be a good fit.

Do you have a child who is in this program in Montgomery county or do you well this program?

Yes I plan to go to xminds next week event.
Ok maybe we need to make a financial sacrifice then. Xminds has an advocacy service I'll talk to them first.

Thanks,
Thanks!
Hi,

My child has been diagnosed with aspergers (High functioning autism) by a private psychologist.

It has been confirmed by a MCPS psychologist.

He has an iep his main impairment is speech and language delay because when he was in third grade his autism was not impacting him academically.
Now we can see it does and he struggles more with his peers.

He has 45 mins speech and language sessions, 3 times a month and extra support in math (he has 2 teachers in class).

In daily basis, he has instruction and behavior support provided by his subject teachers. That's all.

After our iep meeting the team decided to perform some testing to evaluate what services he needs and if we should put autism as his main impairment.

I need an advocate for free or very cheap to help us getting the services my child needs deserves.

Thanks,

How many hours of specialized instruction or related services does your child get per week on their IEP? Are they making progress toward the IEP?

What is wrong with the current school or services?

You need to be able to demonstrate that the current environment is failing to make the case that he needs to be in the Tilden HFA program.

They'll perform some assessments in math, reading and speech because we asked to put autism as his main impairment. Speech and language delay is currently is main impairment because in elementary school autism wasn't impacting him academically but now it does.

We have another iep meeting in June. They have 90 days to do the assessments.

In the meantime I need to find a free or cheap advocate.

Thanks for the questions I need to think about them.

For Upcounty they are Diamond ES, Ridgeview MS, and Quince Orchard HS. I have friends with kids in the upcounty program and they love it.

That's exactly what I needed! Thanks a lot!
Hi,

I talked to one of the aspergers program manager in mcps. I don't think it's a good fit for my child. I double checked this program is for on level or above level students with aspergers but my child is behind in math and english.

In his last math map test for exemple his level is 5th grade. He's in 6th grade but he's supposed to be in 7th. I need to call the county autism department for a class observation and some recommendations.

I'll also post a thread to find a free or cheap advocate specialised in special education.
