Changing school for middle schooler with high functioning autism

Hi,

After some search I don't think aspergers program will be a good fit for my child. He's not on level, autism resource service or more accomodations will be better but I need to learn more first. Thanks,

In the aspergers program they teach appropriate pragmatic and social skills as well as organizational and problem solving skills that will allow students to participate more independently in the general education program. These students have some of their classes in a small classroom setting and others in the general education program.

That's exactly what my child needs

Thanks for your support.

There are a lot of posts about the ASD program at Tilden. I used to teach there (loved it) and strongly suggest that you read all the related posts here so you bring very specific questions to the tour. Please understand that it isn’t a great fit for every kid with Asperger’s. There are students who end up leaving mid year or at the end of the year.

PP, do you have any insight on the WJ ASD program?

Don't make up your mind now. The Asperger's program was designed for children who need more support than resource services. They may be able to make it work for your child. The Xminds people may have more insight and can offer more detailed advice. You might also want to email them and try to talk over the phone.

I contacted xminds I'll talk to them next week. One of the board member has his child in ARS in the middle school we might be assigned. I could benefit from her experience.

If the criteria for aspergerd program is being at least on level I don't think it will work for my kid but I'm taking my time to do the best choice.

Children in aspergers program have more support than in autism resource service?

I thought it was the opposite because students in ARS have also learning difficulties.

OP, is your child in the Social and Emotional Support Services program with small classes? Julius West is one of 5 MS's in Montgomery County that has it. They have classes with ~10 kids in them.

They serve different needs. I don't know about MS but in ES the children in the Asperger's program have a self-contained classroom as their homeroom. They stay there for reading, writing, and usually for lunch. They try to "push in" to mainstream classrooms for many other subjects. For resource services the children are assigned to general education and "push out" in small groups or individually a few hours a week for instruction in their area of need. It might be an academic need or it might be a social or behavioral need.
