I'm still reading! I didn't think it was necessary to get involved in the discussion of moving out-of-bounds. All the rest, I am grateful for. Thanks for the information.

PS - I'm a guy.
Does DC work like NYC... once you're in a school, your child stays in even if you move out of the boundary?
So, I guess the next question is two-fold-- which dual language schools should I be looking at? What neighborhoods with good in-bound schools should I consider for renting in under $3100/month?
We don't know yet. We still don't have a place to move to because we just found out Sunday we'd be in DC.
Any advice on what to do now that I've found out we're moving to DC, not MoCo, about getting my son (entering 1st grade) into a good PS or Charter, preferable a dual language (Spanish-English) program? Call the schools and beg? Submit a round 2 app? HELP! Thanks in advance, DS.
Got it. Thanks. IB for Oyster is Woodley Park, yes?
IB?
Moving from NYC.

Kids are 5 and 7.

Budget is under $900k.
Thanks!
The kids are 7 and 5.

We're in a very suburban-feeling part of NYC right now. There are lots of trees, parks, etc., but you can still hail a cab or get on the subway a few blocks away. My guess is we'd pick a suburban feel over urban... as long as that didn't mean we'd feel like we were in the middle of nowhere or couldn't go out to eat.

One of us will be working in DC on 17th and K, so commute will be important, too.
I've seen talk of all these charter schools. Is that info centralized? Summed up in one thread?
Budget is around $900k, preferably less.

Re: schools, looking for public/charter. Progressive model is ideal. Kids are currently in a SP-EN dual language school. Would be great if that could continue, but not a requirement.

Thanks!
We're relocating to the DC-area from NYC soon. We're a young gay couple with multi-racial kids. This limits us to DC and MD, since they're the only places with marriage equality. The kids go to public school now, and we hope to keep it that way. So, we're looking for that perfect storm of progressive, diverse, young, kid-friendly, and welcoming.

So far, the towns/neighborhoods people have suggested are:
Takoma Park, MD
Silver Spring, MD
Cleveland Park, DC
Chevy Chase, DC
Glover Park, DC
Adams Morgan, DC

Any other ideas? Feedback on the ones listed above?

TIA!
Hi all,

Is there a place online (aside from wading through this forum thread by thread) where I might find info on navigating the DCPS system? We still haven't even picked a neighborhood, but I'm doing my best to get a sense of things.

Seems like there are neighborhood schools and a lottery for schools that you're not zoned for. Is that right? That's similar to what we have here.

Also, any schools in particular I should look into? My sons are currently in a progressive, dual language (EN/SP) school. It would be great to find something like that in DC, too.

Also, any neighborhoods for young parents/parents of young kids (I'll be posting this question in the appropriate forum, too)?

TIA!

Considering a move to the DC area, and liking what we're seeing house-wise in Montgomery County.

Are there any good progressive model public schools in the county? Any Spanish-English dual language schools (progressive model or not)?

Thanks!
