Any advice on what to do now that I've found out we're moving to DC, not MoCo, about getting my son (entering 1st grade) into a good PS or Charter, preferable a dual language (Spanish-English) program? Call the schools and beg? Submit a round 2 app? HELP! Thanks in advance, DS. |
What is your in-bound school? |
We don't know yet. We still don't have a place to move to because we just found out Sunday we'd be in DC. |
Well depending on where you are moving you could end up in a perfectly great in-boundary school. If you are looking for dual-language though (and your in-boundary school does not offer that) you would have to do the lottery via a round 2 app. |
So, I guess the next question is two-fold-- which dual language schools should I be looking at? What neighborhoods with good in-bound schools should I consider for renting in under $3100/month? |
Your best bet is to move into a neighborhood that is zoned for a good school. If you are "in boundary" the school is required to accept you. |
Does DC work like NYC... once you're in a school, your child stays in even if you move out of the boundary? |
move into oyster. |
No. How many bedrooms do you need? |
Oyster Bilingual in Woodley Park. |
Yes, Oyster is your best bet. But you need to stay in-boundary or you can lose your spot. I would rent a small place there rather than rent or buy a bigger place elsewhere. |
they used to let people stay in the school after leaving the boundary, but there were scammers who would take advantage and then move.
can anyone from oyster speak to whether they still allow the practice if being IB and then staying once you move? |
What size is your family. Also, why can you not love to Montgomery county? Does a job require dc residence? |
Love should be move |
Are you sure that it is correct that once you move out of boundary you lose your spot? I don't believe that is the case. If you're OOB you do have to get "invited back" every year but unless your child is a major behavior issue, I've never known anyone to not retain their spot, so long as they stayed in DC. |
