| First year in DCPS. Are storm-related school closings likely? Currently it looks like it is supposed to get back right around dismissal time. |
| No. Buy a big umbrella |
| No. Not unless it's an actual hurricane. Wear a slicker. |
| Op here. Thanks. I’m not actually worried about the storm, just wondering how DCPS is likely to handle it. I recall hearing they’re very conservative about closings for winter weather so wondered if they’d be the same for this. |
Actually DCPS is a lot better than our suburbs when it comes to snow. But anyhow, they'll close if there's flooding such that no one can get to school, but I don't see that happening. |
I super doubt it. They closed early once a few years ago because of hurricane-level winds (I think it was a teacher conference day, so school was closed anyway, but they closed the buildings to cancel the conferences and any day-off camps) |

Please check on the weather throughout the day tomorrow and be ready to pick up your child. The current forecast calls for less rain but increased risk of tornados. If children are still in school during a tornado alert, the school will be locked down and dismissal delayed. Once out, you parents are on your own to stay safe. |
I'd frankly much rather my kid be in school for a tornado than at home. Those buildings are built to withstand a lot more than my ranch. |
Yep. Unless the roads are actually unsafe for driving, as in Metrobus isn't running, they are unlikely to close. I remember the hurricane thing, and it was really an anomaly. |
| Seems extremely unlikely that there will be widespread closings in the District as a result of the remnants of a tropical storm. If there's isolated flooding, individual schools might close if they're affected, but I'd be extremely surprised if they closed or dismissed early due to rain. |
| No, it will be business as usual for school. Rain does not close schools. |
| A school would likely close if its power goes out, or if the immediate area has flooding or a lot of downed trees. But the kids may be safe sheltering in place. |
It rained IN our school and it took them hours to cancel school for the day! |
The winter closings are more about public transportation, sidewalks being cleared or it being too cold for kids to walk. But they would rather have kids in school being warm, safe, having meals. Every school has (pre covid anyway) and emergency plan of where they will go if something happens to the school and they can't use all or part of the building. Ask your school for their emergency plans |
| Looks like MCPS is closing early, and I saw a tweet about a DCPS aftercare program closing today. |
