Does anyone else think couples in the old days had it right by having separate bedrooms?

We look.down and make fun of couples of the 1800s (and before) for having separate bedrooms.... But the more I think about it, I think it was a smart idea. I would absolutely Love to have my own bedroom. Not have to deal with snores, farts, all night TV on, or lights on, etc. It is ridiculous the number of times I am awaken because my husband watching a show (loud), or have the lights on bevacsuse he wants to color, or wakes me up because he is freaking talking/playing with the dog (bye, I DO NOY WANT THE DOG ON MY BEF!!!!), etc.

I want my own room and piece of heaven!!!.

Come, have sex - Bam, Wham, Than you Man, and leave PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to freak SLEEP!!!!!!

Lots of people do this now. There’s even another thread on it. Who wants to share a room like they are someone’s little sister having to pile in? I think this is all part of women waking up. We really don’t have to deal with them 24/7 anymore.

That’s sad. Snuggling with DH before we roll over and go to sleep is a high point in my day. Maybe if he starts snoring, I’ll change my mind.

For many reasons I can see why separate bedrooms might be nice but I really like getting into bed with my husband every night. When he’s traveling I slept on his side of the bed. But we both snore and shove each other!

I don't know anyone who looks down on the small set of very rich couples from the 1800s for having separate bedrooms, or thinks that they did it so they could watch TV.

What? He has slept on the couch for the last 8 years while I sleep in the bedroom. I cannot stand the snoring, farting, talking in the sleep.

1800's? Seriously? Most people lived in places so small everyone was sleeping in the same room. Perhaps in the 1800's people in castles, large estates, all rich people, had the option...see Gone with the Wind and any number of movies about kings and queens, but that certainly wasn't the norm.

Most people would say I grew up in the old days since they consider the 50s and 60s to be that, had lots of friends over the years and cannot recall a single household where the parents slept in separate bedrooms. Some had twin beds like in I Love Lucy but my parents never did.

I think your issue goes well beyond being in separate bedrooms to get some peace and sleep.

My husband snores loudly, and I'm a very restless sleeper, so it works better for both of us if we sleep in separate rooms. We still have plenty of intimacy and cuddling time together, but when it's time for actual sleeping, he heads to his room.

What you're describing here has got me shook. I hope this is very very very rare. I don't understand how your husband can be so inconsiderate and how you've apparently tolerated it...? I'd have nipped this in the bud immediately. If that didn't work, I'd be out of the marriage. Is he severely Aspergers or something? How can he be so rude?

Your husband colors?

Everything I’ve heard about separate bedrooms or couples who have separate beds because they practice Jewish family purity around menstruation, it seems to keep intimacy fresh. But my guess is the happy couples are loud about it and the unhappy couples suffer in silence.

Maybe he colors on a computer? But nothing wrong with coloring.

We're on different sleep schedules due to work, so we'd only overlap sleep-wise about 4 hours night. We've slept in separate bedrooms for years and it's great.

I don’t think this was really a thing…
