Unvaxed roommate?

Anonymous
Our child is about to head off to college in a covid hotspot. The school is requiring masks indoors but not in their personal dorm room. A smallish percentage of freshman (7%) have applied for and received an exemption from being vaxed, according to latest communication from school.

Of course we are concerned that our DC could end up with an unvaxed roommate. Would you encourage your child to ask the roommate if they are vaxed? If they are not, would you request a room switch?

Why don't you pre-empt that ask for your DC to be paired with a vaccinated roommate?

I would absolutely want to know if my roommate were vaccinated. why would a college put vaxxed and unvaxxed together? I would think they would put vaxxed with vaxxd and unvaxed with unvaxxed.

Yes. 7% is not a small number, and I think speaking up would put pressure on the university to take exemptions much more seriously. Some are clearly BS-ing their way out of getting vaccinated.

Do colleges mix vaxxed and unvaxxed student within one room? I would request a vaxxed roomate.

Call the school no find out what they have planned for the vax/unvaxed. You cannot be the first parent asking this question.

Yes. Just last week I asked my child to ask the roommate if vaxxed. Roommate coming from China. he is vaxxed with WHO approved vax. Weird that we did not think to ask until now. And yes, I hope the college has plans to put unvaxxed together.

This. Your kid should put in a request to the housing office that she only be matched with someone who is vaccinated.

Yup. A family friend lied and got a religious exemption.

If your kid is vaccinated, and the vaccines work, then who cares?

If the kid is unvaxxed than why would they care about being with another unvaxxed student?

Guess you are not that smart.

1. Breakthrough cases, do you want your kid risking getting covid from their roommate?
2. Roommate is an anti-science idiot, don't want my kid around that garbage.
3. Most likely a Trumper don't want my kid around that garbage.

See fixed it for you.

My kid starts Tuesday. I have no idea if her roommate is vaccinated. I don’t care. DD is. College has me worried about a lot of things but this is not one of them. I’m sure she will be exposed to someone with covid eventually.

A college students that goes to live in a congregate housing situation without getting vaccinated clearly has a very different outlook and set of values from one that is careful to get vaccinated before vaxxed. People are different with different ideas but that does not mean I want to room with someone that does not respect the vaccine. It is like separating smokers and nonsmokers. IF you smoke..ok...but I don't have to room with you.
