Unvaxed roommate?

At my DCs college no one unvaxxed may attend in person. They have a robust asymptomatic testing program and so far rates are very very low and semester is proceeding kinda close to normal.

When the weather gets colder and everyone is inside all the time with windows closed, we will see what happens. At this point I would say the requirements around covid are a pain but totally worth it to carve out a somewhat safe normal college semester.

We dropped off our son a few weeks ago at a university that did not have a vax mandate. The university was practically begging everyone to get vaccinated, but not requiring it.

I have asked my son a few times if there's any way he can find out if his roommate is vaccinated, but my son is reluctant to ask. His roommate seems very smart (Physics major) and so my son is assuming he's vaccinated.

I would bring it up inadvertently: like asking about side effects of what they think of boosters. Then, slyly say, "Oh, that is If you are vaccinated. I guess we never discussed that. "

TBH though, the unvaccinated kid is more likely to have symptoms, so maybe you would be forewarned??

I would let my adult child deal with their own situation instead of being a helicopter parent.

I had parents like that. It stunk. It's a ok to give a little guidance in a global pandemic.

+1. If you are on this forum and don’t think you helicopter, you are kidding yourself.

Darn. We don't stack up to PP's standards. So disappointed in myself.

NOT!

Unvaxed kids are not infected kids! What are you worried about? Yes, your kid can get infected from a vaxed or unvaxed person, so?

Better to worry that your kid has good eating habits, exercises, doesn't drink or smoke and takes Vitamin D and a good quality multivitamin every day. That's the best defense against covid, even if your child is vaxxed.

My kid starts high school tomorrow. Some of DCs classmates are not vaxed, and some teachers aren't vaxed. I'm not worried at all. Not one bit. My kid is very healthy, vaxed and the school requires masks. If DC gets covid, we'll deal with it, but I doubt it will happen.

And what makes you think you are the ultimate arbiter of what we should all feel? I am trained in public health, and don't share your carefree attitude.

+1. Get the vaccine and wear the friggin mask so we can end this thing.

Multivitamins and Vitamin D pills are expensive urine. Neither protect against getting or transmitting COVID.

Yes. 7% is not a small number, and I think speaking up would put pressure on the university to take exemptions much more seriously. Some are clearly BS-ing their way out of getting vaccinated.

I am with you. The 7% number is alarming. I know I am not alone in my concern. My college students would most certainly want to know if a roommate or suitemate is not vaccinated and they would ask for a change.

Says the unvaccinated mom.

Not the PP, but both I and my kid heading off to college in a week are vaccinated and this is 100% correct. The fear mongering on this is unbelievable. I think people are honestly addicted to COVID panic.

Being vaccinated or not doesn't stop you from getting or spreading covid, it just minimizes the symptoms. I don't see why it matters if the roommate is vaccinated. If the unvaccinated kid wants to risk it, there's little effect on your kid.
