| I've switched from canola to olive and cocunut. I was told canola oil is not healthy. What do you all do/think? |
|
Are you asking for cooking purposes? Coconut oil isn’t very good for you either, so I’ve read.
I have switched to avocado oil for cooking since it has good fats and a high smoke point |
| Olive reigns supreme for health but I agree with pp that smoking point is more of a concern so if health is important to you cook at lower temps with olive or try less healthy but great options like safflower. |
|
OP here. we were always told that canola oil was good by our family doc but now it's not?! Everyone talks about coconut oil being healthy - but pp says it's not...
is there a good article on this with reliable sources. I can't seem to find the consensus on this. |
| I had this argument with DH. Canola is garbage. I only use olive oil, avocado oil or ghee. |
|
From what I have read, canola, vegetable, safflower, sunflower, corn, coconut are all high in omega 6 fatty acid which in excess can be inflammatory. Most of us already get too much omega 6 in our diets since most foods cooked in restaurants or already prepared are made with these kinds of cheaper oils.
Olive oil is super heathy but not great to cook in beyond medium heat. Avocado is also very heathy and has one of highest smoke points which makes it great to fry with or sear meat, brown vegetables, or any cooking requiring higher heat. |
|
Olive oil is good. Coconut is unknown (conflicting studies out there). Canola isn’t great but better than others. All oils are okay in moderation especially if they aren’t heated to very high temperatures.
Fish oil is of course the best for nutrition but you’re not going to cook with it. |
Oh and avocado is good too. |
| I got avocado oil for the first time and don’t like the taste. Is this an issue with the brand or does it usually have a very distinct taste and smell? |
Cold pressed unrefined olive oil is going to have more of a taste. If you want it more neutral, by the refined kind. It is still heathy |
| ^meant avocado, not olive |
| I cook with olive oil and butter. I also like walnut oil if I can find it. |
I don’t like it either so I just don’t use it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |
| Read Dr. Mark Hyman. I'm using coconut, avocado and olive oils. |
Extra Virgin olive oil for most cooking and baking. Avocado oil for high heat cooking. Coconut oil and clarified butter are good too. Buy it from Costco. Canola and seed oils are highly refined and not good. |
