Obsession with survivalism?

My 20 yo dc has recently been musing about going to a different city by themselves for a trip, provided it’s safe with COVID. Would you allow this?

Say what?

Connecting the title and the post - is your child looking to go with a pocket knife, a kitchen towel full of a change of clothes knotted around a stick over his shoulder, and without a cell phone or credit card?

The OP's child is planning on hopping trains. My buddy, Adam, did this while we were in college.

It's has its risks but Covid sure isn't one of them.

OP, please fill in the gaps here.

OP here. My DC starts college again in Sept and would like to go on a trip somewhere until then by themselves. I think that’s incredibly dangerous. Do people allow this?

That's it, an adult traveling alone in their home country?

Can you please use the right words, then? Survivalism means being prepared and able to live off the grid, hunt/grow your own food, build your own shelter, survive without any benefits of modern society.

Stop being dramatic. Some teens go on backpacking trips to Europe at your son's age.

So. Is your son prepared to travel by himself in his own country? Is he used to taking public transportation on his own here? Has he traveled by himself already to different states? Does he know how his bank account works, and how to keep IDs and money safe? Can he orient himself pretty well? Ask for directions? Does he have some smattering of street smarts?

Where do they want to go? Depending on this answer, no it’s not dangerous and a great like skill.

Incredibly dangerous? When my DD turned 15 she and her best friend took the train from NYC to Boston and spent a weekend there. A family friend checked them into a hotel, said goodbye ten minutes later, and they spent three days exploring the city. It gave them a ton of confidence and they had a great time.

How can you not allow your 20 year old?

I would let my 16 year old do this.

At your son's age, I moved across the Atlantic.

Does he have special needs that you're so worried about him? In that case, you should have indicated that in your OP.

Are you just worried about covid? I hope he's vaccinated and wears a mask.

I mean... what's the problem here?

OP here. It’s my daughter, and she won’t tell me/doesn’t know where.

She’s vaccinated and COVID safe. But we’re not lenient.
