What’s with the extremely annoying air horns?

I don’t know, but I was thinking the same thing last night.

NYT says it's to remind the swimmers of the last lap?

That’s wrong, the ringing bell is for the last lap of the lead swimmer in a distance race.

The air horn is just cheering (annoying as it may be!).

It's not just for the lead swimmer, each lane has an attendant who is also monitoring the turns for any violations who steps forward when the swimmer in that lane is approaching the wall for the last 100m and rings a bell over their heads. I saw it in the 1500m last night and thought it was very amusing.

I noticed that tonight too! In the meets my kids do, even the big deal meets, it’s just been the lead swimmer. I guess at some point they add it for each lane.

I also didn’t see any counters, I wonder at what level swimmers no longer use that.

Are you referring to the coach whistling as a pacing issue? As a PP mentioned there is a bell that rings on the final lap for distance swimmers, is that it? I haven’t heard any horns in the tv coverage? FWIW, I didn’t think horns were allowed as a pacing device as it would mess up and interfere with other swimmers? But I may be mistaken or rules may be different at the Olympics?

Yes, but for mere mortals who swam in local meets, there’s only a bell fire the first winner. I’ve only ever seen a bell lap for everyone at the Olympics. Maybe other international meets have it as well?

During races (mostly longer distance) you can hear loud horns, like soccer!

Like the crazy coaching whistling, but an air horn.

That’s not these horns. These horns are used throughout the entire race. You’re certainly not telling a swimmer when a 100 meter event ends.

It's cheering, supposedly.

But on breast it can be a ploy to pace a swimmer.
