. Maybe I do not understand what the complaint is. As I have seen soccer playing at Stoddert and Ft Reno, camps at Turtle, middle school at Fort Reno, and high school at Guy Mason. Is it that the fields are not open to other sports, or, other baseball teams? |
NWLL doesn't use Fort Reno at all. Jackson-Reed HS of course gets most of the time, and then maybe CCLL Juniors and some travel teams use it during the evenings in spring. Also, NWLL gets very little use of Guy Mason. Hardy MS gets that, Jackson-Reed softball gets that, as well as travel programs. NWLL may get that for a couple of hours each week, tops. Volta is a tiny field, no? Not sure who would rent that other than some other TBall program. Can't comment on the others, however, I would imagine Stoddert soccer and other programs might be sharing some of these parks. |
The fields may be open to other baseball leagues, but are not open to be booked by other sports regardless of the season and, on at least some of the fields (e.g., Palisades Park), there are signs that explicitly prohibit other sports being played on baseball fields. As this is DC, people don't always follow the rules. But there is a critical shortage of playing fields in NW DC and I know from personal experience that it can be extremely difficult to book fields for activities other than baseball during the spring and the fall seasons. |
My kid has played NWLL on all of those fields (plus Turtle) bar Fort Reno. No doubt many of these fields are able for use by other baseball teams and leagues, but not by other sports. This is a problem as many of those other sports struggle to find places in NW to play. |
Well, that isn't an indictment of NWLL and securing field permits...that is a global city issue with respect to dedicated grass baseball fields. A turf baseball field such as at Emory Rec Center just uses portable bases and a portable mound and no HR fence, so you can remove the bases and get full use of the field. Obviously, a grass field with dirt infield and dirt mound and HR fence cuts up the field. I actually don't feel like there is an abundance of dedicated baseball fields, so not joining you in your complaint. Hopefully, the new Maret turf fields at Episcopal will help a bit as those fields should be open to Rec leagues on many weekends and evenings. |
You are getting joy from this? Do us a favor. Stay in CapCity. |
We have to stay in CapCity because those are LL rules. If only my kid could get a fake waiver...oh yeah, NWLL are the experts on that. |
Yeah, NWLL! No doctoring reasons and waivers to sign up this family. The previous poster says they don’t want them. Find someone else to illegally recruit. Requirement: they must not appreciate Schadenfreude and must have a ghost draft score or 4.0002197. All kidding aside, don’t worry about it. People aren’t exactly banging down doors these days to play baseball with Northwest. |
Everything is relative, I guess. There are probably more baseball fields in NW than soccer fields despite soccer - not to mention the various other sports that can be played on soccer fields - being many times more popular than baseball. When my kid played soccer, we ordinarily had to head to Carter Barron because there was no space anywhere west of Rock Creek. |
Ricky Davenport is a site manager for DPR... seems like that probably helps. I always understood that was what he brought to the table. |
Stoddert only has kiddie soccer. No one else can use it. |
You also can get a "stipend"! |
And he’s been in that role since 1990. Hence the reason why NW has so many fields that can be used for nothing other than baseball. What a freaking scandal. |
