Looking for live-in care for my elderly mom - dementia

Anonymous
Hello,

I'm looking for someone to be a live-in assist for my 90 year old mom, with dementia. We're located in the Brookland area. If anyone has any referrals, please let me know. Thanks

How many hours per week?

40 hrs, plus free room and board. Hours/days negotiable, but need round the clock help

How many people are you hiring?

Round the clock help is not 40 hours. How can you get 24/7 support and only pay for 40?

Don't be dense. I'm not the OP, but I understood this as she wanted off hour support (i.e. evenings/nights), rather than 9-5. She clearly said she would pay for 40 hours.

I;m not the OP but in NY you can have someone be on duty in your parent's home for 24 hours and just pay for 13 hours. https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/legal-and-compliance/state-and-local-updates/pages/new-york-high-court-upholds-13-hour-rule-for-paying-live-in-aides.aspx#:~:text=State%20%26%20Local%20Updates-,New%20York%20High%20Court%20Upholds%2013%2DHour,for%20Paying%20Live%2Din%20Aides&text=Under%20this%20rule%2C%20an%20employer,of%20which%20must%20be%20uninterrupted).

Yikes that law is cringeworthy in my opinion. 24 hrs shift and only 13 hrs pay? Live in meaning no life of your own?

Agreed.
I'm also unclear about the actual hours OP needs, since she says "round the clock." Is OP thinking something like:
Monday 8am-4 pm
Tuesday 2 pm-10 pm
Wednesday 6 am-2 pm
Thursday midnight-8 am
kind of thing? No consistnecy?

If a person is on call overnight then they are technically working those hours and you have to pay the minimum wage at minimum for those hours. I used to sue people who did not do this

Again this is dependent on the state

Regardless of the law, if someone expects a caregiver to be "on call" overnight with no pay, they are a despicable person.

I don’t think there’s any scenario where live-in elder care isn’t exploitation. If you have a separate apartment and they want to rent it, it should be a separate transaction.

Elder care employees commute for shifts at all hours. It’s not like you can’t find an overnight shift without live-in. You can, from any agency.

Our best elder care aides become like family and I would never recommend a live-in situation to them.

The live-in would be the overnight shift and she'd have to hire people during the day/weekend to supplement.
