NVSL Team Reps

Anonymous
Is there a NVSL rule on team reps filming or coaching their own kids while they are on deck while all of the other parents have to sit in the spectator area? It is obviously bad form, but does anyone know where that falls within the NVSL rules?

No. No rule against that.

They are the team rep. They are allowed on deck. Volunteer for a job on deck and you can be there too.

OP here- on our team no one on deck is allowed to take pictures or video except the the Team Rep. No one else. It doesn't seem right to watch them berate others for taking a quick shot and then they stand right over their child filming and giving coaching advice before and during their swim. Just trying to find the specific source on this in the rulebook and don't see it.

Thanks for the additional info. That does seem like a "do as I say, not as I do" example and would be annoying.

You aren't allowed to video or take pictures from behind the swimmers at the start. That's a Safe Sport guideline but not an NVSL rule. We have moved people from behind the start who wanted to video and take pictures.

The filming is a pool rule. Not an nvsl rule.

Weird they allow no one else to take pictures. I work on deck at meets and have taken pictures.

PP here.
I mentioned it is not an NVSL rule, but it isn't a pool rule either. It is a SafeSport guideline that the NVSL follows.

Just from behind the start. Filming is most certainly allowed and happens all the time.

So this is not accurate. Safe sport says no filming from behind the blocks (not the start) and there is a reason what filming behind the blocks would be potentially a problem. NVSL does not use blocks, so it is a different scenario all together.

I am so grossed out that that needs to be a rule, but it’s a good one.

Your team rep sounds like kind of a jerk OP, sorry about that. I’ve definitely taken pics or video of my kid while I’m working the meet.

PP here. Yes, that’s what I said.

NVSL considers “blocks” and the “start” under the same scenario since we don’t use blocks.

Weird we have a team photographer who takes pictures on deck. Team reps certainly don’t and don’t particularly cheer for their own kids as opposed to the whole team

Our team reps stand on the side of the pool and video their own kids swimming. They also coach their own kids as they head to their lane for their race, reminding them of where they are on the ladder and who they need to beat to move up on said ladder. Keep in mind this is all said and done in front of the rest of the team. Shouldn't the team rep be in team rep mode and not parent mode while on deck?

I’m so glad that we have people willing to be team reps that I don’t really care if they give their kids tips on deck. Seems like a reasonable perk.
