Negative test, no period

Anonymous
If you have had this, what was the cause? No blood test was done, but definitely not too early to do a home test and that is definitely negative. Also, I’ve been having nausea and mild cramps. I keep feeling maybe it’s my period coming, but then it isn’t. I’m 36, no peri-menopause symptoms, periods are generally very regular varying (if they do) maybe 1-2 days.

how late is your period? I have a very regular period, but occasionally stress delays 2-3 days.

First, the list of symptoms related to perimenopause is a long one. And every woman experiences it differently. Oftentimes, the first symptom is a missed period. It’s not like you have hot flashes and then your period starts to become irregular. It’s more like a slow realization that something is shifting. I had two periods in one month when I was 46. Then just as I turned 48, I skipped a period for the first time. I’m 54 now and am still in perimenopause.

It would be highly unusual to start perimenopause this early at age 36, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

did you do anything unusual this month? trip? stress? vaccine? those things affect the length of a woman's period.

When I got vaccinated, i was late 10 days.

I did go on a trip, but not illness or vaccine. Trip is over now and it wasn’t stressful. In the past trips would maybe add 2 days to my period, but not 6.

How many times did you test?

Two options involving pregnancy:

1) it's taking a while for the HcG to get above the detection level of the test. The accuracy claims are based on 1-2 weeks after the missed period. Read the test instructions carefully and test again or email your OBGYN.

2) It could be a chemical pregnancy and the HcG is now below the level of detection and your period will start soon. For my chemical I got 2 positives and then several days of negatives before getting my period.

Same here.

OP here: yeah I had a chemical pregnancy last year and I also had a positive before it turned into a negative and then my period came. Since I didn’t even have a positive this time I’m not hopeful for a pregnancy, I just find it odd and am wondering whether I should go to an OBGYN (the thing I’m mostly afraid of is an ectopic, though I have cramps but no pain) and anything that would require a D&C. I don’t want to need one and not know.

In almost all cases, an ectopic would result in a positive pregnancy test.

Anything that would require a D&C would probably have bleeding, pain, and/or a positive test (even faintly positive).

If you get to 2 weeks past and the test is still negative I'd still email my OBGYN. They will probably tell you it's no big deal (skipping a period can happen in an otherwise healthy person) but they can give you more certainty about when to worry.

Since you're on TTC, are you TTC? How long have you been trying? Being over 36 and skipping a period and TTC for 3+ months might be enough for a referral.

Thank you for the bolded, that’s helpful to know.

I would also think I just didn’t ovulate this month (though I’ve never had it happen), if it weren’t for the nausea and the cramping. That makes me feel like something is wrong.

I was actively TTC last year (ovulation tests, marking down the right days, temp checking), but I had no luck (only a chemical pregnancy as I mentioned). So we had a discussion about it and chose not to pursue any interventions (we already have 2 kids). So we are not trying anymore, but I’m also not on BC, if that makes sense.

Update?

I had a couple negative tests with my last kid (who is now 10). I think I was a couple weeks late when I finally got a faint positive sign. Meanwhile I’d been drinking every night because I was so sure I wasn’t pregnant. She’s fine. No idea why it took so long for the hormones to register.
