I completely goofed and misread the first day of pre-k school as starting the day after labor day. Then made a bunch of work and childcare arrangements based on that that would be possible to undo, but very inconvenient (for me anyway).
How big of a deal is it to miss those first two days? My kid is quite social and adaptable, I'm more worried about upsetting the school. Also, are the first few days of pre-k full days? |

depends on the school. sometimes it's half days, sometimes it's just kids A-L for one day, M-Z for the next....totally fine to miss it. If your school does home visits or any other teacher meet ups that's a nice time for your kid to connect and feel comfy.

| I’m generally very relaxed about this stuff, but I’d make an effort to change your schedule and start her on time. There’s a lot that happens in the first few days! |
| It is no big deal. Kids will be joining off the waitlist throughout the first few weeks. |
| As an above poster noted, it may only be one day depending on your school. At CHML, and possibly others, it would actually be zero days. That said, I'd definitely try not to have my kid miss the first two days of school just for the kid's sake. |
On the one hand, I don't think it's a huge deal. The school won't really care. I'd actually worry more about your kid. On the other, this is a really bad attitude to take towards school this year. You probably know that, but the idea that you wouldn't switch around things to have your child attend school because it's inconvenient is... weird. This is real school. Not a private daycare. |
Are you sure you misread the schedule? Some schools doe not start PreK until a week later after the rest of the school starts. |
Sorry, let me go flagellate myself for having the gall to be a single working parent who can't easily rearrange her schedule, even to accommodate her own mistakes. |
| My kid missed the first week of pre-k a few years ago because we had a planned vacation with family wedding. I emailed the teacher and it was totally fine. |
Go blow it out your ass |
+1 Pre-K starts later, it looks like it starts Thurs, Sept 2. So I think maybe you did read it and plan correctly: https://dcps.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dcps/publication/attachments/Final-SY-21-23-Calendar-English-updated-3-8-21.pdf |
This poster literally said it wasn’t a big deal, but that inconvenience really isn’t enough to justify missing school. That’s completely correct. Lots of people treat PK3 as though it’s private daycare and it actually causes big problems for the teachers and class. As a one off, no big deal though. |
As a teacher I have seen kids come late and struggle the whole year as they are always behind trying to catch up. I have also seen parents do this and continue to do it throughout the school year, and continue every year on multiple occasions. Only time will tell. Setting schedules and routines help students become successful. Good luck either way. |
| If it is a public school they will care. |
Different teacher - I mostly agree. It’s really annoying when kids miss because of planned vacations etc. however I wouldn’t say that missing the first few days of school will lead to your child being behind all year. But it gets to be a real pain when parents want special accommodations and requests because their kid is missing school for a trip when they knew the calendar. But, your Pre K kid will be fine. Just don’t make it a habit. |
