Russian School of Math vs. AOPS

Anonymous
Looking for feedback from parents who have experienced both. I have a DS10, who has been at RSM for four years, and he loves it. RSM is focused on math, so when I wanted extra LA content for him, I had to go to AOPS. Now I have a DD6, who is about to start 1st grade. Looks like AOPS doesn't start till later grades so if I want extra math for her, it would have to be RSM. Just looking to see if the two programs are meaningfully different, and if there are any efficiencies I'm missing.

AoPS has "Beast Academy" for the earlier grades. I only have experience with Beast Academy and AoPS (happy with both), but not with a comparison to RSM.

RSM will not allow students to participate in various contests, like Math Olympiad and MathCounts.

Really? That was not mentioned when we signed up. I guess we will find out because DS ES has Math Olympiad and we are hoping he is interested.

Completely false. RSM even has dedicated classes for math competitors.

AoPS starts in 2nd grade for both math and language arts. If your DD is very advanced in either math or language arts, she could take a placement test and possibly enroll in the 2nd grade class next year.

I've had a principal tell me that he had to verify that students are not involved in these contests.
I have seen RSM participating in Noetic Math League directly.
Others at my school participated but were not aware of the restriction. Parent said they would ask and I advised against it.

If RSM is being used as a standalone school and the student is not going to a regular school, then that is different.

I doubt it's true for Mathcounts. For in school contests, I would imagine they have the rule in place so kids can't take the Math Olympiad test at school, and then take the exact same test at RSM.

We just moved to RSM and there was no mention of not doing Math Olympiad outside fo RSM. DS is not involved with the Math Competition track that RSM has so I doubt that he has any type of restrictions.

I think the only restrictions they may pose is that if RSM is a separate entrant into, say, Noetic Math or Math Kangaroo and you participate through them, they don't want you to participate through another entrant. Which is totally fair - no double-dipping. My DS did Math Kangaroo through his Russian language immersion school, and they definitely don't want you do it anywhere else once you sign up to participate through them. Basically, you can enter specific competitions only once and not through multiple entrants.

That makes total sense and is fair. We did AoPS last year in third grade. I am not sure what age math competitions are available. I know DS school has a math olympiad club/team that we think he might want to do. We do not intend on his joining the competition track with RSM unless he asks.

The main contests for 3rd and 4th graders are Math Olympiad (MOEMS), Math Kangaroo, Mathleague.org, and Continental Math league (CML). Of those, I think MOEMS is the most beginner-friendly and mathleague.org is the most appropriate for the hardcore competitors. Math Kangaroo is more logic based and less math based, but that can be great for many kids. You can register individually for all of these except MOEMS, which has to be taken through a school.

Not doing something at RSM and the base school makes far more sense if that's the rule. I haven't seen RSM competing in these contests locally though, except for Noetic Math League.

NP here with rising fifth grader who loves math and is at mid-sixth grade level. DC is likely going to start RSM in fall as AoPS is not close to us (we are in dc).

Any more feedback +\- on RSM?

Thank you
