How obnoxious is it to miss rec games?

My kid plays a sport on a select team with an hour long game every Sunday. He sees that sport as a priority and doesn’t want to miss any games.

He’d like to add a second sport which also has games on Sunday, meaning that there will be some conflicts I assume.

How bad is it to miss a few games?

What sport, and what age?

Generally it will be fine, but it depends.

How often? As I tell DD who wants to do it all, it’s not fair to make a commitment to a team if you aren’t going to honor it. She joins a rec team that has most games on opposite days of her other team. There are few conflicts. Some seasons she’s participated in clinics with friends for a sport instead of joining the rec team if we thought there would be too many conflicts.

Pretty obnoxious for games that require a certain number of players to show up or the team forfeits.

^and it also depends on the team. If it’s a rec team that I know has double the amount they need to play it’s generally okay. She’s been on some teams where that’s not the case and so many players missing have resulted in forfeiting games. That is not fair to the kids who show up every game and where this rec team is their only sport.

Former rec basketball coach perspective: Our league (McLean) tried to keep rosters small in order to ensure adequate playing time, so we were kinda screwed when we ended up with 2 of our 8 kids who signed up knowing that they would miss the majority of the games.

I'd ask about roster sizes before signing up. Definitely not fair to other kids.

If your kid plays select they will likely be one of the better, if not the best, players on the rec team. I think most coaches and some of the kids would be slightly miffed when your kid chose to play in another game rather than theirs.

I would sign up but note in the registration that “Larlo is also playing SuperFrisbee and will miss some games due to schedule conflicts”. That way they can put him as the extra player on a team.

If they are both on Sunday, would it really be a few games or would it be most of the games? We signed up for two sports this spring and ended up missing most of the Saturday games for one of them because they were scheduled at the same time. It was fine because it was 6 year old baseball, the roster was huge, and there were 2 baseball games per week, but I am not going to sign up for conflicting sports again in the future.

It happens. Rec basketball was sparsely attended throughout our league last night because nvsl divisional relays were at the same time. Most coaches understand that kids have priorities

It’s different sports. He’s never played the rec sport, so probably some of the experienced kids will at least start better.

If it’s a rec sport he’s never played before, then the coach and team will probably be happy he is missing the game.

is he going to practices? The kids playing multiple sports/ ADP soccer killed my son's rec soccer team this past year. There was a whole group of kids that never went to a single practice b/c of conflicts with adp/ baseball. There was no observable difference in skill between the kids playing adp and the kids just doing rec. This group of kids would, however, show up for games- and the coach had to play them all equally. They didn't know how to play together at all and they badly lost every game. If you sign up to be a part of a team, you need to be part of the game. Can you miss a game or a practice? sure-- but don't sign up if you are going to have lots of conflicts.

I don’t know. Both sports are about an hour so in theory they should both fit. I have two kids in different sports and when they have both had Saturday games, I have usually managed to make it to both. I am kind of surprised that I can’t find any Saturday sports for this year.
