APS teachers leaving?

Anonymous
Are drones of APS teachers really leaving? I have heard of 10 Ashlawn Elementary school teachers retiring or going to other schools. Is this partly because of the new Cardinal school?

You can see for yourself. I suspect that these numbers are normal for a large-ish system, but have no other inside info otherwise.

I think about 10 teachers from Taylor were reassigned, presumably due to the rezoning (and another handful retiring or moving away). I wouldn't be surprised if that were true for Ashlawn as well since some of their students got rezoned.

Ashlawn teachers who left were by and large moving to other districts, mostly because they were commuting long distances and decided it wasn’t worth it or because they decided after this year they needed to be in the same districts as their children (and live outside of APS).

Cardinal school?

The new school at the Reed site, comprised mostly of former Mckinley students.

Anecdotally is does seem like more people are moving around this year (personal choice or being moved by APS) I know a couple who have left APS.

A bunch of teachers were furloughed when the School Board voted to increase class sizes next year.

+1. This past year seem to cause people to reevaluate their lives and commutes. Everyone leaving our ES school with the exception of two people are headed to a different school district that is closer to where they live or for more pay.

+1, us too. This year really caused a lot of people, not just teachers, to reevaluate their priorities.

So jealous. That is so much better than Innovation.

APS unfortunately had a lot of teachers who commute, and this works against it in the new world.

I noticed that the APS and FCPS school year calendar are fairly different for 21-22 (most notably spring break). I wonder if that also factored into decisions about leaving.

There is a lot of movement this year because enrollment is still whacked. Lots of families not returning and so teachers need to be reassigned away from (mostly North Arlington) schools.

I'm sure all of the above reasons are factors, but it's interesting that no one here on DCUM is owning up to the poor treatment of teachers by Arlington parents this past year. Many teachers were dumped on for things that were not their fault. It's no surprise that some are retiring early or going to other districts.
