We are first time dog owners. Our less than one year old dog is usually quiet in the house, but when she is in the yard she barks randomly at passerby people, birds, squirrels, and other things we don’t know about. She is loud. We don’t let her bark outside between 10pm and 7am, when many people are asleep, but during the day we would let her bark a little, maybe 10~15 seconds, before we stop what we are doing to stop her from barking. This would happen about 3 or 4 times a day. We give her lots of attention and exercises as we are home most of the days, but we can’t keep our eyes on her 24/7. she is still a puppy who is curious about everything. We think she will eventually grow out of this habit as this is not a breed known for barking.
Our neighbors live over 100 feet away from us. Are we being bad neighbors by letting our dog bark a little? Thank you for any sincere feedback. |
| She won’t grow out of it if yiu aren’t training her not to. |
| I have a similar dog. Never barks in doors but will bark at random things outdoors. I bring him in as soon as he starts barking. I bought a vibration collar I need to use it |
Thank you. I’ll check that out. |
Oh, that’s too bad. Does telling her “be quiet” while bringing her in the house constitute training? What else could I do to train her not to bark outside? |
| Especially on wknds - but any day really, even letting your dog bark at 7:30AM is a little too early IMO. |
| Don’t leave your dog in the yard. Take it for walks. |
| Maybe you should have adopted an adult shelter dog who doesn't bark and needs a home instead of buying a designer dog who shouldn't even exist. |
| You leave your dog outside all day long?! Has it occurred to you the dog is lonely? |
Noted. Thank you! |

My dog loves to bark and growl at passers-by so I only let her out in the yard when I can go with her. But then we have a low iron Capitol Hill style fence which means that passers-by might be especially scared by a pit mix barking at them. And it also means that it would be easy for someone to steal my dog. So consider my circumstances when I say this - but I think one ought to check on one's dog if they're out in the yard and barking, so your neighbors know you're paying attention. I want my neighbors to know that I am there and in control of my dog. My dog gets most of her exercise from two walks a day and we only go out into the yard for a quick potty break.
On another note, you could ask your neighbors how they feel about your dog barking. They might not care. |
Not OP and yeah I hate it when dogs bark excessively, but our dog loves being in our backyard in addition to the multiple walks we take her on. She would spend all day out there especially in the fall and winter if she could. It’s their natural habitat. It’s one thing to leave a dog outside out of neglect, it’s another to let them explore there environment and instead of being stuck inside all day. |
We had a trainer come to our house and she told us barking is the hardest thing to correct so try to nip it in the bud early. Yes tell your dog to be quiet and when they don’t bark after you say the word give them a treat. Obviously if they continue to bark after you say quiet don’t treat. They need to understand the reward for not barking. You can also help to train them by putting them in a sit/down and treating when someone comes to the door so they are too distracted to bark. |
| I don't let my dog spend all day outside but yes, he loves being in the yard and patrolling his fence and when he does, he barks at delivery drivers. It's not more than 15 seconds at a time, it's not all day, and it's when he's in my yard. He's a dog, he's not meant to be silent. |
Good to know that. I'll try to nip it in the bud. Thanks for your suggestions! |
