Our synagogue has stated that members need to show proof of vaccine and that will be keeping a "vaccine registry" of the members. Only members on the registry will be able to attend events from now on.
This is in California. The first event is tonight. I am vaccinated and I have the QR code from California but the synagogue says that it is not enough. I need to show the original record with the doses, dates, type, and location received to prove that two weeks have passed since my last dose (QR code doesn't show anything except that you were vaccinated). I don't feel comfortable with handing over my medical record. I feel like privacy has gone out the window and feel violated. Are other churches doing this registry, too? |
Nope. My church (Greek Orthodox) trusts everyone is being truthful about being vaccinated when they come for services. However, I think your concern is justified and this is an intrusive request. |
Wow. This is frightening OP. I don't like to see church and state mix like this. I'm a Christian and attend a Protestant church, so I don't know a lot about how synagogues are structured. Is there a lay committee of members who make policies like this for your synagogue? With whom can this be discussed and appealed? |
| I support tracking the unvaccinated to protect the congregation from them. It should be public knowledge with the congregation. |
| They should track unvaccinated people and set aside a closed off area for services to protect the congregation. No mixing. |
Why does a vaccinated congregant need "protection" from someone who is not vaccinated? You do believe that vaccines work, right? |
| My church has been extremely encouraging of parishioners getting vaccinated - 6 months ago putting in terms of “get vaccinated so we can open up”, but they have not mentioned any kind of register or spatial separation of vaccinated from unvaccinated. We are not fully open yet. |
The only “church/state” connection here is that covid vaccines have been distributed by the .gov. Hardly material. |
Maybe I didn't explain it right. Only members on the registry (vaccinated only) can attend services. |

Private religious group: they can do what they want to do.
Religious organizations don't have to admit gay people or anyone else they don't want to admit, they don't have to pay for reproductive health care, etc... They can do what they want OP. |
What on earth does the state have to do with this. Nothing, at all. In fact, the synagogue expressly said they would not accept the state record showing proof of vaccination. It wants OP's individual medical record. Use your head. |
| Weird post. Jewish people don’t use church and synagogue interchangeably |
+1 Yikes |
Honest question - why are you uncomfortable showing your vaccine card? |
| My Catholic Church is not asking people to prove vaccination status. If you would go to Mass, you probably aren’t going to lie to a priest/community. Or at least that seems to be the thinking. |
