I buy things and clothing for kids that are within my budget, but I tend to buy whatever are popular fashion or common among that age group. For example, for my 5 year old, I buy him clothing that are sporty look (like longer shorts & shirts) and darker color (he says black and blue are cool). And, I also get him some cool caps, shoes and etc accessories. They are not expensive brands, e.g. adidas, nike, old navy, target and so. Am I thinking too much because DH comments that I don't have to buy things following trend necessarily? I want him to be part of the norm group, and I don't want clothing to be the reasons that he might get bullied or commented on by some mean kids. Overall, my boy likes the clothing I get for him because he thinks he looks so cool!
I have different standard though that I tend to buy more neutral and simple modern look for my 4 year old girl because I don't like princess looks. But, I do buy color that she likes, and I buy her cute clothing but I just avoid laces and ruffles those details. She has not said anything yet, and she does not mind wearing her brother clothing because she looks up to him. |
| Dress them in what you like now, because soon enough they’ll have their own ideas! |
| I don't worry about what might be cool. 6 year olds don't know anything about coolness! I want my kids to have the balls to march to their own beat and not care what anyone else thinks. |
| I buy my kid things he will wear and that are weather appropriate. I have never once thought "Is this dinosaur shirt cool?". |
| He could be wearing the trendiest item of the year and still be bullied and have no friends. |
| 5 year olds? They just need to be comfortable and able to play in their clothing. |
| I buy things at Marshall’s and tj maxx. Kid clothes are simple and the shoppers and re-shoppers who decide what goes in the store do all the trend vetting. |
This. Don't over think it. Kids that age don't care about brands, etc. Just that they are comfortable and can play in their clothes with other kids. |
| We have boys so first we go to Value Village and if they need something more it's on to Old Navy/Target. Now that they are teens, I pretty much let them buy whatever they want in terms of fashion. I haven't noticed any issues with fitting in or bullying. |
| I buy things I think look nice (for example I like plain or patterns but not a lot of pictures, I don't like camoflage or neon) and which they don't object to wearing. Sometimes they have preferences which I indulge within reason -- dinosaur shirts for DS, flip sequins for DD. They are young, they and their classmates don't care about "cool." But if you're shopping in the same kid stores where everyone else shops -- gap, old navy, carters, target -- it's all the same. None of the clothes there are going to make anyone stand out or get bullied (and I'm not sure avoiding certain clothes for bullying reasons is a good strategy anyway). |
| Do 5yos think anything is cool or uncool? I buy my 5 and 3yo boys plain cotton clothes in shades of blue, pink, purple, and grey primarily because they're easy to mix and match and easy to pass down. I don't like pictures or words on clothes; it's all structured shorts and chinos and jeans and mostly collared shirts, some tees. Currently pregnant with a DD and she'll inherit most of it (though I will supplement with some cute dresses for fun and we'll give the boys' dress shirts to friends). I loathe athleisurewear on kids and will dress them my way until they start resisting, but there's no sign of that yet. |
| No 5-6 year olds care about cool yet. If they express reasonable preferences, then great. If they don't care, pick what YOU like or what you think they'll like, not what other random kids will like. |
| My 5 year old has no idea what is cool now. For my DD I buy clothes that do not have glitter or cutesy sayings on them. |
Yep, i agree with all this. Most of what's out there is pretty similar regardless of whether it's Carter's, Gap, or Tea Collection. Mostly I dress my boys in basic stuff (I buy a lot of Gap Factory from the store in Old Town out of convenience because I'm close by) and let them pick out some tshirts they like (like the PP does) with whatever themes they like. |
What is athleisurewear on kids? I have boys so maybe that is why I am confused? |
