How do you shop for kid clothing

Don't put ideas about cool in a five year old head!
We wear whatever is in the hand me down bag from cousins. Ten years in, so far so good, but just staying to see stronger opinions beyond comfort.

Mine are only 3 and 5 but I buy lots off facebook marketplace. Like the 3 year old just got "3T summer boy lot". I like carters and Gymboree. The clothes you get on FB are excellent and barely worn. I also like that with one lot you get swim, rainwear, play clothes and sometimes dressy clothes. It's just easy.

For holidays, photoshoots, and to see relatives, I get them boutique clothes.

I buy my 5 and 3yo boys plain cotton clothes in shades of blue, pink, purple, and grey primarily because they're easy to mix and match and easy to pass down. I don't like pictures or words on clothes; it's all structured shorts and chinos and jeans and mostly collared shirts, some tees. Currently pregnant with a DD and she'll inherit most of it (though I will supplement with some cute dresses for fun and we'll give the boys' dress shirts to friends). I loathe athleisurewear on kids and will dress them my way until they start resisting, but there's no sign of that yet.

What is athleisurewear on kids? I have boys so maybe that is why I am confused?

NP. Clothes that adults wear to work out in, but now wear everywhere. Like leggings and nylon drawstring shorts

I think of anything that looks like it was designed for sports as athleisurewear - basketball shorts, e.g. I see a lot of kids in UnderArmour and I really don't like the look unless they're actively playing a sport.

Almost all my 5 year olds clothes are from cat & jack at target. The clothes are a little trendy while also plain (little to no graphics/writing etc) and come in fun colors that can be mixed and matched easily. The clothes are cheap, comfortable, and durable.

I try to minimize the amount of demand we generate for sweatshop labor/ textile waste, so we buy almost everything resale or from certain fair trade online retailers (mostly basics-- t-shirt, leggings). If there's something we can't find that way, then we'll head into a store.

For my K boy, every spring and fall I buy all the GAP Star Wars tees and 7 pairs of pants or shorts, depending on the season.

Ha I have boys who play basketball so they're either in school uniform (weekday during school day) or basketball shorts (weekends).

I have a 5 yo boy and I like good quality clothes and colors that are not blue/dinasaurs. So I tend to order tshirts on Next uk site (same price as Gap/Target, but better, less gendered designs). For shoes I splurge on good quality, try to buy on sale on sites like AlexandAlexa. We also don't wear sports clothes if we are not playing sports, so for normal days it's linen shorts and tshirts and leather fisherman style sandals. At school he wears a uniform.

I started out being very practical. More neutral, less expensive clothes. As time goes on I’m realizing they’re only little once. I love pattern, colors, matching outfits. Would have never bought Mini Boden or Lola and the Boys a few years ago. But dammit it brings me joy so I spend money on what I like now. Who cares if it’s practical. I do buy from a local resale shop often. But I don’t save anything for special occasions. Lilly Pulitzer goes to daycare just like Target clothes do.

I like unique clothes and shop at boutiques online.
Some of my fav's:
sparkleinpink
miabellebaby
dashofglitter
sweetgirlsboutque

I know my kid sticks out like a sore thumb though as we are from Texas and have noticed kids do not dress the same up here, especially girls. Not many bows, no ruffles, pinafore dresses, nor hair jacked up to Jesus with a bow even bigger than their head.

I almost exclusively buy my children's clothing from Primary.com - it is very simple, basic styles that will not go out of style, which is great because they have a three year age gap and the clothes hold up well enough that I can hand them down. Like - they DON'T fade. At all.

This for a 5 year old.

My DD8 has developed preferences though. She refuses stuff with lace that Grandma buys. She likes GAP and Cat Jack leggings but not Hanna Andersson leggings or Old Navy ones. I don't know why, but she says certain leggings are more comfortable than others. She won't wear certain tops and dresses and I just can't figure out why. I think she just likes ultra comfortable clothing rather than being conscious about how it looks on her.

It’s expensive though
