| I'm leaning towards a hybrid, preferably a plug-in model, but open to suggestions. I really like the Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid, but it's more than we wanted to spend. Any that you currently drive that you'd recommend? Or ones I should check out? Thanks! |
| I love my Kia Niro. |

Inventory across that entire category is going to be tough...
RAV4 Hybrid or Prime Kia Niro Hybrid or EV (but beware they are switching over to a true EV skateboard with the EV6 and will be ditching the Niro EV, plus there have been some recall issues. They are also terribly bland to look at) Tesla Model Y (huge, and surprisingly affordable in the EV category) VW ID4 (boring to look at, can creep into Volvo pricing territory if you want options, but does have the rebate in tact) Volvo XC40 Recharge, but the price creeps up |
| Thanks, I test drived the VW ID4, and I liked it a lot, but it felt slightly shorter than the SUVs I'm used to and the trunk space seemed kind of small for an SUV. Also, starting to lean more towards hybrids to accommodate longer trips. |
Honda CRV hybrid too Ford Mustang electric |
We got the id4 and love it. Definitely roomier than my Mazda CX-5! |
| Love my Ford C-Max energi (plug in hybrid) but pretty sure it’s only available used now. |
Thanks for that. Are you able to find plenty of charging stations on long trips? Have you ever GPSed one that wasn't there or wasn't operational? This would be my fear, but it may just be an unfounded fear of the unknown. |
The Electrify America network, which VW set up as part of the Dieselgate settlement, has stations all over the place on many routes for long trips from D.C., which you get three years of free use of with a new ID.4. I've also seen a lot of other level 3 options on apps that list charging stations. Most of the EA sites seem to have between four and eight stations at each site, so even if one of them isn't working, I'd imagine it'd be OK. We just got an ID.4 and also love it, but we're yet to take a road trip in it -- doing three in the next month, though, so maybe I'll report back. |
That would be great!!! |

Took the road trip with the ID.4 this weekend, and it was super easy to charge at the Electrify America stations. Charged once going to New York, a stop in southern New Jersey that took about 20 minutes; traffic was horrible going up there, so the trip took almost 6 hours, but that had nothing to do with the car (and probably helped the range, since it gets better mileage at non-highway speeds, anyway). Arrived at family's house with about 39 percent state of charge, did some driving around while there, stopped once in northern NJ for about 15 minutes on way out of town and then once in Delaware for 20 minutes (at a station at a Wawa, where we also got snacks, used bathrooms, etc.), getting battery to 80 percent from 30 percent. Battery is now at 31 percent here at home, so we probably could have charged slightly shorter time periods at both stops.
Had trouble with one machine and called EA service. The call got dropped, and while I was waiting for them to call me back, I got charging working on another machine. They did call back and said they'd have the one I had trouble with escalated to level 2 service just in case. Anwyay, based on that experience, I've got no hesitation about any kind of east coast road trip in this car. |
