I'm watching Mare of Easttown and there's Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce and they are just some of the many actors who are able to sound totally American despite having British or Australian or whatever accents. So I'm wondering, are there any American actors that you know of who have pulled off sounding like they are from another country, with a legit sounding accent? i can't think of any. I'm not sure audiences in other countries would even put up with that. |
John Lithgow as Churchill in the Crown
Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love Renee Zellwegger in Bridget Jones Diary |
You .... know they work with dialect coaches, right? I mean, right? |
Mixed reviews but...https://screenrant.com/leonardo-dicaprio-blood-diamond-movie-accent-divisive-controversial/#:~:text=His%20character%20was%20from%20Rhodesia,African%20accent%20in%20the%20film. |
A lot of people are surprised when they find out James Marsters and Alexis Denisof from Buffy/Angel aren’t British. |
Meryl Streep is good with accents. She had accents in A Cry in the Dark, Sophie's Choice, and Iron Lady (and probably others). |
I recently re-watched Blood Diamond. His accent wasn't great. |
I thought Tom Holland as Spider-Man was convincing. |
Gwyneth grew up in nyc Renee is an American who played a Brit, poorly |
They are Americans, no? The question was about Americans pulling off accents. |
Kevin Costner FTW! |
Well, at least, actors in question are all English-speaking, and they do have coaches who train them.
And, FWIW, OP, 'actors from other countries' who aren't bilingual and don't have native-level English proficiency, never sound totally American. |
Here's the deal. If you're American and need to play a Brit, this can be accomplished (with a certain degree of preparation), much like if you're from NYC but need to play a character from rural Alabama. However, if you're American and need to play a Swede -- in Swedish - no amount of dialect coaching will make you sound authentic unless your part is literally five words long. Anything longer than that, and you'd give yourself away. |
The example was other English speakers adopting another English accent. It wasn’t about sounding convincing in another language. |
