My four month old is a good sleeper. Except every morning, like clockwork, he wakes up at 5am. It’s definitely not light coming in the window because the sun isn’t up yet! He’s just awake and wants to roll around and gurgle and smile at me and spit up, all of which is fine but...could it please wait until 6?
A day looks like: 5am: VERY AWAKE 6 or 6:30am: 30 minute nap then naps after 1.5-2 hours of wakefulness, ideally three but sometimes they’re 25 minute naps so there are a lot of them 5pm, give or take: last nap, usually short sometime between 7 and 8: bedtime 2am: feeding, back to sleep I haven’t been trying to put him on a schedule, this is just how his tired signs have worked out. But I’d really like him to sleep later, so I can sleep later. Any advice? |
| If you feed him does he go back to sleep? |
At 2am, yes. At 5, absolutely not. He eats and then he is extremely jolly and happy to see me. I sit quietly in the dark and read DCUM in the hopes he’ll go back to sleep but he never does. |
| Advice? He’s 4 months old. You need to wait. |
Yeah, that’s basically what I figured. He’s already a much better sleeper than any of my older kids were, but my life is more complicated (see above re older kids) so I can’t nap any more. Whine whine whine.

| Idk because I am reading dcum listening to my 8 month old babble, hoping she’ll roll over until 6. |
| Can we arrange a 4 am play date with my cat? |
| He dropped off again, I’m going back to bed, much love to all you awake at this hour! |
| Keep doing what you're doing though by not starting the day at 5. And work on cutting out either or both of those feeds soon. |
| My 4mo also starts the day at 5am (or if she wakes up anytime after 5, can't go back to sleep). Seems normal for the age. |
Hah same. But at 4 months, this is great. I remember during the regression my kid was up 5 times a night. Ugh. |
I credit the Snoo. My older kids did NOT sleep like this! |
Too bad it is so expensive. Even the rental at $4.60/day is outside of most household budgets. A lot of working class parents (the heroes of the pandemic, remember) could use a few uninterrupted hours of sleep. Maybe the company can set up a benefit like that for essential workers a la free coffee and baseball tickets. |
| Remove the last feed at 2am!! And adjust his feeding. He should be able to drink a good 9oz. The goal would be for him to eat : 7-7:30 , 11-11:30 , 3-3:30, 8:00 pm The last bottle. |
I breastfeed, so I don’t know exactly how much he’s getting. (I mean, A LOT, this kid is huge.) But I’ve never done a firm nursing schedule with any of my kids until they’re quite a bit older than this. He did a couple weeks sleeping from 7-5 with no wakeups but when he hit the four month regression he started waking a lot and then settled back to one wake up. |
