Day Out in Baltimore

What would your perfect day out in Baltimore be? Interested in hearing about museums/attractions, neighborhoods to stroll, restaurants. Bonus points if interesting to teens.

Fells Point is similar to Old Town Alexandria, tons of restaurants and pubs.
Inner Harbor for kids and more touristy, but still cute with water.
Federal Hill, I don't know much about but has pretty homes and restaurants.
Little Italy, near Harbor and has good Italian food and Vaccaro's the good pastry shop.

In normal times, the acquarium and science center are both great. My guys also liked the ships/submarine you can walk through.

Not sure what the protocols are now.

My kids love the Walters.

Did you really just compare Fells point to Old Town?

It's fun to take the water taxi. You can go from the Inner Harbor to Fells Point or just across the water. The Visionary Arts Museum is the side of the harbor opposite the aquarium. Even if you don't go in, there are interesting sculptures outside that you can walk around and view. However, my teens actually like the Visionary Arts Museum,

Maybe also tour Ft. McHenry?

The Walters is great and it is free. If you are up in the Mount Vernon neighborhood having dinner, the Helmand is a great Afghan restaurant.

Isn't Hampden the hot hood now?

Another vote for AVAM, it's a great museum for all ages. My kids loved it at ages 3 and 6. It's a true feast for the eyes, very experimental.

Fells Point is more strollable with the shops, you can duck in and shop as well as eat. But you can water taxi over to the Inner Harbor and then walk over to Little Italy to eat. I've always been partial to La Tavola but there are amazing places like The Charleston if you want to go all out.

Mt Vernon is pretty, but less bread and circus than Fells. Though you can definitely enjoy a walk to Brewer's Art and have a Resurrection and their garlic thyme fries.

While the Helmand is an old fave, the Cazbar knocked my socks off when I went a few years ago. Spot on Turkish food, total hospitality, and the way they serve the Raki! All around divine. Not quite Mt Vernon area, but in-between Mt Vernon and the Inner Harbor.

Inner Harbor is amusing if you've not done it before, but loaded with tourists and full of subpar restaurants. There is much better seafood to be had at Fell's Point.

Ah, now I have nostalgia for my B'more days....

I liked waking around Hampden (the avenue). Ice cream at the Charmery. Dinner at Woodberry Kitchen. Walk around the JHU campus and the Baltimore Museum of Art (used to be free). It’s a drive, but picnic & walk around the Cylburn arboretum or Sherwood Gardens is nice if the weather is good.

Also completely agree that the AVAM is one of the best museums out there.

I’ve lived in NYC for 2 years now and this sounds insane, but I still really miss Baltimore in all of its dysfunctional glory - rats and police helicopters and all. It’s too clean and fancy here in New York. Have fun in Charm City!

Glad it was fun for you. Not so fun for crime victims.

Why’d you move?

We are considering the Staybridge Suites or the Hyatt Place. Mainly because both of these hotels have a separate living room from the bedroom. That way even though we will have to be in for bedtime, we can at least talk and have some wine while our toddler sleeps in the other room.

Thoughts? It seems these types of hotels are not easy to find near Harbor.

It is 2021. google maps, zoom in on area you want to stay in, look for hotel icon, name of hotel will be next to it. In my quick 15 second peruse, there is a courtyard Marriott which typically have cheap suites, Hampton Inn and suites, Residence Inn, Hyatt Place, Staybridge.

What about this is hard to find?

You sound surprised. They’re pretty similar, though I would give the nod to Fells Point.
