Half-days on Wednesdays!?

Anonymous
A poster mentioned DCPS is considering half-days on Wednesdays for teacher PD. Does anyone know if this is really a proposal?

I thought it was joke

No idea if this is real or not, though I personally would be okay with it as long as we were given lots of notice and options for childcare (ie extended aftercare hours on Wednesdays). As with everything about return to IPL, there are workable options available, but DCPS will almost certainly choose to communicate nothing and then spring it on everyone when it's an impossible imposition and everyone will be pissed.

Classic.

Where did you hear this? Thanks!

Hate it. I would much rather have a full week off so we can do something.

I’m a teacher and have not heard this anywhere.

The only place I have seen it is in one of those DCPS Trendency surveys.

We had this in California. We loved it. It was a nice break for the kids in the middle of the week and allowed us to do medical appointments without missing school.

Teacher here. We have definitely had this discussion at our academic leadership team meetings. From what I understand this is a serious proposal being discussed at central. There has not been any formal decisions, but we are putting plans in place so we are prepared. We have been told it is for select students to receive “acceleration” learning from outside providers. Teachers will be receiving anti-bias training and more training on “accelerating” the learning of all students.

They put this on the schedule at my charter this year and I was livid because it’s so working family unfriendly. Then the pandemic happened. LOL.

And what about the non-select students? They get picked up at noon?

On a Wilson call with the principal last week the message was pretty unequivocal that DCPS would be 5 full days in person in the fall...

I’ve heard similar at my school.

How do families with working parents manage this?
