How does one play travel soccer and be on the High School team? I would think practices would overlap.
|
Your travel team is your first commitment as High School soccer in general is weaker in structure and competition. This just my opinion your milage may vary. |
| HS is right after school. Often travel is later in the evening with weekend games. |
Yep. You just make it work and minimize the breakage. |
Right that's your opinion, however, you don't get an opinion on what is priority. Either the club or the HS makes that decision and you need to see if it works for the other. Some clubs aren't interested in a part-timr player due to HS obligations. Some clubs may make exceptions. On the flip side, some HS coaches want priority. |
This. DS' HS coach won't tolerate a missed practice, even for a graded school event that takes place after 3pm (hence you missed HS soccer practice). Miss a practice for ANY reason? You sit out the next game and MUST be on the bench for said punishment game. Doesn't matter if you were skipping practice to go on a date, grandma died or you had a graded music concert you had to perform in. When a HS has 100 kids try out and stack the roster with 25, they can be absolute like this. SO some High School soccer coaches are militant about missing practice. The clubs we have been with understand and have asked the boys to attend at least one club practice a week in order to participate in the weekend games. HS Practice 3-5pm, club practice starts at 7 or 8pm... |
I would take that up with the principal, and if that doesn't work the regional superintendent. It seems like a good way for a coach to get themselves fired |
Most clubs will reduce the number of practices during high school season. The games would wait until it's over, so in Maryland we will start in late fall with games and continue through the winter. If you're in ECNL or MLS next it may be different. |
This is why the better players skip the low quality HS soccer all together. Trust me colleges want to see your club career they give 2 cents about HS. |
For a lot of kids there won't be college soccer. Our club is understanding- they want at least 3 practices a week including school practices and at least 1 with the club team for players on a HS team |
| Our team has 'optional' club practices for HS players, trapped 8th graders have an earlier practice with U14s. If you have a smart club coach, they will understand the wear on the kids is too much and reduce the burden so they can enjoy HS games while a club season isn't as robust. |

Our club coach says that going to HS practice then going to club practice afterwards can be extremely exhausting. He said it’s no big deal for MS + club practices as MS practices are only 1 hour and not tiring at all.
Hence, he discusses this situation with players that plays for HS and works out a plan with them. He’s also a HS coach so he understands the situation & conflicts. |
| It depends on the goals of the player. If trying to play in college then club is probably more important. But those are in the minority. Most HS age players have no interest in playing in college and playing with friends in HS may be best for them. |
| I found HS coaches tend to make practice exemptions for the high profile players. If they miss a few it is ok. My kid plays on a high profile team and there have been many practice absences for HS practice this spring. |

does anyone here know if CCL teams generally allow players to play on HS teams? or is it a team by team decision?
