If my junior is ending the year with a few Cs...what colleges should he be looking at

Anonymous
My junior is going to have a few Cs this year. It is what it is. Hardworking kid in AP classes, rough year due to a variety of circumstances. He will have around a 3.4 or 3.5 weighted GPA. ACT score pending, but practice was a 29.

What 4 year schools should he be looking at that can look past a few bad grades in a craptastic year? Anywhere along the east coast, and any price point is fine.

Here are some places to consider:

https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/a-plus

USNWR also has Liberal Arts and Regional versions of that list.

https://blog.prepscholar.com/colleges-for-b-students

Here will have options, have no fear!

Ouch, yes rough. So sorry. Kid may be smart also but some bad circumstances can be hard on thdm. I would also suggest going for 1 yr to community college and get direct admission to state flagship. You do not have to do 2 years (associate degree) and then go to state school, you can in some cases go after 1 yr. . It will be very advantageous because kid can work hard and make up for the lack of content knowledge from HS in CC and score well and be well prepared to do well in college.

The transcript and degree does not say that it was from CC.

BTW, this is something I have thought for my children too and they are high stat kids.

Op here, he is looking for a 4 year school. Not worried about getting into somewhere “better” later on.

Soooo many. What’s he interested in? Big? small? Urban?

UMass, Pitt, Michigan State, Elon

They may be reaches but a 29 ACT might get him in.

My kid with a similar profile got into Ursinus with significant merit and SUNY New Paltz. Attending New Paltz and very happy there.

Public or private hs?

OP here: Public HS, he’s a social kid and wants a school where he can have fun, not in the middle of nowhere, city or suburban is fine, not a quirky school. He’s interested in IT (but probably not straight CS), criminal justice, business, not quite sure yet.

I know the gpa doesn’t look awful, but I’m more worried about the junior year Cs. (Physics and History)

There are a decent amount of big schools that would be fine - Penn State, Indiana, Alabama, Clemson (maybe), some Florida schools (FSU, UCF). In MD, Towson, in VA, ODU or JMU

Does he want to major in the sciences? The GPA will be more problematic if he intends to do that.

Not Pitt, Penn State or Clemson, IME.
