Janney is not fully open for any grades. K and first only go 2.5 hrs/ day (let’s not call it “half days” since it’s not even that) and I know 5th only goes 2 2.5 hour sessions/week. I understand 2nd grade was not able to offer slots to everyone who wants it. To add insult to injury, the number of live instructional time has plummeted and my child now basically has two days/week with barely any class time.
Meanwhile, I understand that both Murch and Lafayette (two schools with larger school populations) are able to offer 4 days/week to anyone who wants it. Janney leadership gets defensive and doesn’t want to get into why Janney isn’t able to do the same. |
| Because the principal isn’t willing to make staff come back. |
And I guess she doesn’t care because she is leaving? |
| I'm not sure the principal can force staff back but it's not 4 days a week because there are teachers who are refusing to come back. |
| What’s the feeling for next year? We’re counting on 5 in person days. Can’t take much more of this. |
This can’t be true. If it were just the in person teacher shortage, then they would join the AM and PM classes for K-2 and run it full day with the same teachers they already have. |
Yes. I think they must still be doing some kind of cohorting or limits on class sizes. |
|
Yes, they're limiting class sizes.
And in some grades they have limited teachers who will agree to come back. Fifth grade has 3/5 back. |
| And this is why we are leaving Janney for private. I have no hope DCPS is going to get their act together and a new principal has to build equity with teachers, so they’ll push even less. |
| You guys already chased out an amazing principal. When will enough be enough? |

Janney teachers are a dime a dozen. There is nothing special (we have been there and at other DC Schools).
Let them leave. As I reflect on my children's education, the best teachers were from a Title 1 school. The Janney teachers are fine, sweet, mostly inexperienced. They get high impact ratings because there are few students who have behavior challenges / are not prepared for school. I am hopeful that DC shakes up the leadership team like they did for Lafayette. |
Who are you talking about? |
Why didn’t you stay at your Title 1? |
We thought there was something behind the hype |
So at Murch and Lafayette, either ALL the teachers have agreed to come back or the principals required it? How can this differ from school to school? How are they handling kids who are still doing DL? There’s a huge difference between all kids going back 4 days a week 7 hours a day with IPL with a teacher vs my kid going back for a total of 5 hours/week (2 days a week only). |
