Swanson said in the PTA letter today that SOLs are still on. Hybrid will take them on in person days and virtual will take them at school on Mondays. They said a parent can fill out a refusal form. What impact will that have for HS? There is some alternative being administered for English and World Geo. That accounts for one of their HS classes (foreign language, math & world geo). Does skipping the math, science or reading(?) SOL impact credits in HS? I'm not anti-test and have never considered skipping them, but I'm not sure how we feel about sending our kid in on Mondays to take them this year. |
Further down in the email we got from the superintendent there was a discussion of a virtual testing alternative for kids in full time distance learning now. I would hope those online tests would suffice to award verified credit. |
Can a HS class taken in MS give a verified credit? I saw some discussion on AEM, but never an answer. |
I think you don't have to take the SOL this year but definitely a future year to get the verified credit that counts toward the advanced diploma. This matters for their high school transcript and college applications, so talk to your child's counselor before making any decision. |
Yes, but some colleges want to see 2 years foreign language in HS too. |
Not a problem. Our student plans on taking the foreign language throughout HS. |
Science no, since it's not a HS credit. If your child is in Algebra, I would have them take the SOL to get that Verified Credit for graduation out of the way if possible. If not, they will take the Geometry SOL next year. I think it's up to you and how strong your child is in math. It will not affect placement. |
So, if they take the Algebra SOL this year and Geometry next year, math SOLs are done, right? |
My son took the Alg 1 SOL in 7th grade and it is listed in his transcript as a HS verified credit. |
My 8th grader is taking Algebra 1. If we skip the SOL this year, the class doesn't count as verified? |
It does not. It's SOL or s-o-l for the virtual kids. |
As far as earning one of the five verified credits needed for graduation, no. He/she would still get credit for the class. You need to pass 5 SOLs in HS credit classes to get those verified credits - one math, one science, one SS. Only SS has been given the option to do an alternative assessment in HS for verified credit this year. |
For an 8th grader, math seems to be the only one that matters. I don’t see why I should send them in on Mondays to take reading or science. |
Correct that VA DOE is offering a virtual assessment that kids can take if they are in FT distance learning and want verified credit? |
Nope. According to Swanson, the virtual test doesn’t count for a verified credit. Ask your testing coordinator. This should be sent to all parents. |
