We are looking to buy somewhere in IB for LT, looking for any insights about the school. Both GreatSchool and DC School Report Card (https://dcschoolreportcard.org/schools/1-0271) gave it lower rating - 6/10 and 3 out of 5star, respectively. Any LT parents that can share their experience.
We have a 2.5 year old and another one on the way, so we are not immediately going to be enrolling and could have other options as we get closer to that age. |
| It's good. Don't expect to get in for PK3 though. |
| Wow LT is only a 3 star school. And yet higher SES parents flock to that school and not my 4 star school.... |
|
Only around 1/3 of L-T families will have access to hybrid learning in the 4th Quarter, 2 days a week.
Meanwhile, 100% of Brent families who want full-time in-person learning, 4.5/days a week, are being invited back for the 4th Quarter. Just saying. Go in with your eyes open, OP. |
Lol what?? Ludlow is inviting back 50% of students 4 days a week for term 4. |
I just posted in the other thread. This is totally false. L-T will have more than 50% of all kids back in the building for T4. PK4 and 3rd are already meeting demand in T3, but only going every other week for the PK4ers and 1 of the 3rd grade classes. The other grades are all 4 days/week model and are nearly meeting demand in K, 2nd and 5th starting in T4; PK3, 1st and 4th are only meeting about 1/3rd of demand. Also, Brent isn't giving a spot to everyone who wants one, though their return to IPL has been quite impressive. |
It was a 4 star school (close to 5) the year before. I explained in the other thread the reason for this. I think it will easily be a 4 star school again the next time PARCC happens. I actually think it's swing in one year is really good evidence that the OSSE metrics are totally screwed up. |

I posted my longer post in the thread that got locked, so just pasting it below:
LT is great. When we bought IB not quite 2 years ago, it had an 8 on GS and 4 stars (close to 5) on OSSE. The decrease on both measures is because test scores declined slightly two years ago (the last time PARCC occured) having increased astronomically for the 4 years prior. If the crazy test increase from 3 years ago had been split evenly over 2 years and the kids had ended up in the same place, it would still be a 8/4; because they jumped way up and then fell slightly back, it had a crazily out of whack impact on the growth metric. (If you pull the last 5 years of test scores, you will see this is all true; 3 years ago they had *crazy* good results -- like outperformed every other school on the Hill if you compared across subcategories and actually outperformed Brent in ELA straight up as a T1 school v. 80%+ white UMC. Then-Principal Smith flat out admitted they outperformed their iready predictions that year and then slightly underperformed the next year and the result was bizarre catastrophic for the OSSE scores, which fed into the GS scores. There are also a bunch of threads explaining this at the time if you search this forum.) Anyway, my older two kids are at L-T and we are very happy. I posted something like this on here two years ago -- again, you can probably find it if you search -- and was told to go for it and I'm so pleased I did. I really like the school community & my kids have had great teachers. My kids have made friends -- even w/ kids in their class during COVID thanks to playground meet ups and outdoor masked playdates -- and the teachers have gone above and beyond to support learning (e.g., ECE teacher did a pull out group for kids that were reading/on their way to supplement the focus on learning letters/letter sounds appropriate for most of the class; in no way is small groups for ECErs a DCPS or even school expectation, the teacher just did it). The school will have more than 50% of kids back in person for T4 and both of my kids will be there (one already is). If you have any specific questions, I'm happy to answer them. ETA: Here's my thread from two years ago that I referenced above: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/802945.page#14992730. |
Yes Brent is, for quarter 4 from April 26th. Everyone. We're in-bounds for Ludlow, lotteried into Brent years ago. I'd buy in-bounds for Brent or Maury, OP, not Ludlow. |
| What percent of LT kids are are attending SH for middle school? Are families staying? Or peeling off for charters? |
Except the middle school problem...at least LT has a decent option with SH. |
I think a lot has changed over the last few years. Your experience is dated. |
| We've been hearing that on LT threads for a decade. Still not convinced. |
A decade ago L-T was T1, ~20% IB and had virtually no white population. Today L-T is not T1 (and only 16% economically disadvantaged), ~60% IB and plurality white. Clearly nothing has changed. |
The percentage is dropping as the school gentrifies, but it’s still a solid majority. I believe L-T lost roughly 25% of kids last year between 4th and 5th, which is still substantially less than Brent/Maury/SWS, which all lose more than 50%. That said, part of L-T’s gentrification was just a huge influx of IB kids who previously went elsewhere. For years, L-T has been adding a full class per grade. Next year’s 5th grade is planned to be the first 5th grade year with 3 classes and the current 4th grade is the oldest majority IB grade, so it will be interesting to see what happens there. |
