Preschool and Daycare Discussion
| We have been waitlisted at our top choices and I am not super psyched at our options right now. |
| Yes - waitlisted at our top choices as well (all small programs so it's not surprising). I think DC will be fine at one of our backups but I'm not all that excited about them. |
Take heart. We've been accepted at 3 of the schools often listed here as top choices and are still waiting for others. Obviously, we and many others will be giving up lots of spots for the waitlists in the weeks and months to come. |
| just curious..would people mind sayingwhat schools they are sad about not getting accepted at AS WELL AS what schools they are excited about? |
| No, we can't, because that might undermine our child's ability to get into Harvard. |

I find the whole process maddening. This should be about providing a stimulating, positive environment for 2-3 year olds to transition from a home/daycare/nanny-share environment to school based-learning. Yet, it seems to become a cut-throat college admission-style ball of stress. How do these places even pretend to be able to evaluate the kind of "student" a child will be when they will have completely changed developmentally in the fall when they actually arrive (particularly when most "interviews" are simply 30 minute play sessions)? Are the introverted behind-the-norm toddlers out there destined for second rate nursery schools? After all, there are no teacher recommendations to give these place some true sense of how these little ones learn. Most all the decisions are made superficially at best.
To be honest, I'm put off by the whole process, but it is what it is. We're all a part of it and that's why were playing the game (and reading this message board). Still, I can't help to think that in the chaos of nursery school applications/acceptances we've missed the real point here -- having happy, well-adjusted little tikes heading to kindergarten in a few years. I truly believe that goal can be achieved at many more places out there than we sometimes think. Ok, now... back to the waiting game for more decisions... and maybe a nice glass of wine to easy the pain of waiting! |
| a glass of wine is definitely in order! |
| i was beyond sad a few years ago when we first went through the preschool process. Don't stress out. We went to our 5th choice preschool and have loved it so much that it's the only place we considered for our younger kids. The oldest had a wonderful time at the preschool and is now in our first choice school for K. |

Not sure if it's the wine or the sudden influx of positive energy (thanks 03/08/2010 18:43), but I think I'm at risk of thinking this will all work out. What a refreshing change from the gnawing fear that my life and child's future will end if we don't end up at our first choice.
Let's try more wine and see if this gets better... and keep our fingers crossed when the mailman arrives again tomorrow. |
Really, do not worry. You want your child to go to a good school that provides a nurturing and stimulating environment. They will do the rest. In the universe of good preschools, "top preschools" are, in economic terms, merely positional goods. You don't have to fall for them. Consider this your first educational test. Will you be the parent that exudes genuine confidence in your child's bright future so that they succeed? Or will you fret about each twist and turn of their education, trying but failing to hide the worry that your child inevitably will pick up on and internalize? All they need is a place to grow and the confidence that they can grow. Give them both of those and don't look back. |
Sigh, where were all these great posts last year when our mailman took out a restraining order on me? . Pediatricians could give handouts at 2 year visits. Thanks for the positive posts!

| I don't want this to come off as gloating, but our child has been accepted so far at four of the following: CCBC, CCPC, Concord Hill, St. John's, River, Aidan, Franklin, St. Columba's, and NCRC. Obviously, we'll only choose one, and that opens up at least 3 spots. We still are waiting to hear from others too so it could open up more than 3 spots. We had no connection to any of these schools or any other priority so that's why we applied to so many. The point is that this will all shake out and you will get off a wait list! |
| Aidan, CCPC, CCBC and NCRC haven't even mailed their letters yet. |
Wrong. |
| I got a no from CCBC so letters have been mailed |
