STA was missing a bunch of starters including offensive players as well. They definitely got outplayed but there were a bunch of kids who had never played in a varsity game before playing significant minutes. Even if it’s a scrimmage, St. John’s is a quality opponent and a tough first time draw. The best play of the day though was the STA LSM pump fake and blast past the St. Anne’s goalie. He never saw the ball.

So the defense was hurt and the offense was missing? Where were they?

Why so many questions? It’s really not hard: There were like 4 or 5 players who were out. Hockey and injuries. A couple of them are some of the best players. I think one is preseason all area. STA doesn’t have the depth to play their best with those kinds of kids out. Still. It was a scrimmage and it’s only February. Will see how it goes through the season.

The top 4 teams in the MIAA this Spring (in no order) will be Boys Latin, Saint Mary's, McDonogh and maybe Calvert Hall.

After these 4, the next tier down is St Pauls, Severn, Gilman, and Loyola, all good programs that are very capable of up-setting any of the teams above. Spalding takes a mega step back this Spring. John Carroll in Bel Air might actually surprise some teams this Spring. MSJ will most likely finish in last place.

My gut tells me it's we will see a BL vs Saint Mary's final come May. The Saints ran with SJC this past weekend, they also had more depth. If Millon is out for McDonogh, the Eagles could be in trouble. BL is simply loaded with firepower. BL vs SJC in a couple of weeks will be very telling as well as Gonzaga vs McDonogh.

STA killed Ryken and played no one. The Penn commits didn’t play, nor the Bowdoin kids, or the Cornell commit, etc. After beating those guys by a ton last year, they threw frosh and sophs at them this year.

Against St.John’s and St. Mary’s they were missing the kid going to Cornell, another defensive starter, one of the best 25 attacks and another attack who is also all Met in soccer and hockey. The other defensive starter is likely to play football in college. While those guys are not STJohns level lax guys, except for the kid going to Cornell, all 4 are future college athletes and starters or key subs. None played. When STA is down 4 college level athletes, it makes a difference. They wouldn’t have beaten St. John’s with them but they were close to St. Mary’s without them. Assuming St. Mary’s was at full strength, which they may not have been, I think full strength STA does ok.

Apologies for diverting the discussion back to 2022 season: SJC had a historically great team and players. That was on display over the weekend when a number of 2022 grads played significant minutes for Syracuse in the game against UNC in the iconic dome. What a great atmosphere with a very large crowd. And two 2022 grads for Gonzaga played significant roles in the win for UNC. My point is the DMV may now rival Baltimore and LI as one of the best regions in the US for producing talent.

I really believe DC area lacrosse has surpassed play in the MIAA.

The MIAA homers refuse to play in the Geico Nationals for a reason... most if not all, refuse to play the big boy boarding programs from New England West (Deerfield, Salisbury, Taft, Brunswick etc. etc) Summer and Fall games at the NHSLS don't count either.
