This isn’t awkward, this is a guy who is physically disgusted by lower CASTE Americans. He hates where he’s from and the people there. He hates his own family. Several family members are vets and if they were desk duty or non-combat, they modesty acknowledge they "didn't do much" in the military. They don't pretend and mislead people into thinking they risked their lives or "defended our freedoms." While a shameless coward like JD uses weasel words to infer he was some gun-toting freedom fighting military hero on the front lines in Iraq dodging sniper fire and IEDs. It's very likely public relations JD only fired his gun one time at age 18 during boot camp. He was never in harms way, he spent the duration on his brief stint on a desk in North Carolina, and he left the military as soon as he could. He was a student government shyster checking a box to become a politician.

+1 My dad served but it was peacetime between Korea and Vietnam so he never really needed to do anything. He had many friends and family who had to sacrifice much more and so he never made a big deal about his service.
