APS - Over/Under on Duran changing his mind if CDC reduces school distancing to 3 feet?

Anonymous
I've been hoping/praying for the CDC to reduce the distancing guideline to 3 feet for schools (especially elementary). It seems like it may actually happen, but I'm skeptical and reluctant to think Duran will put the effort in place to open schools full-time ASAP. Hopefully Northam signs the bill with the emergency clause and takes the power away from Duran, but what are everyone's thoughts here?

It will not happen until the fall. Plan accordingly.

Why not, if CDC reduces guidelines to 3 feet? Other than Duran and the SB not wanting to deal with logistics, aka - doing their job?

Do you have any idea how complex the logistics are? Offering a choice to the ones who,had to decide about virtual in December. Teachers, classrooms, bus routes, etc. Our numbers in this area are still not great. Just stop.

Yes I do.. and I'm tired of logistics being the excuse for our kids' learning and education loss. I couldn't care less how much work it takes to make this happen. Time for APS SB and Duran to step up to the plate and figure it out. Our neighbors surrounding us are figuring this out, so just stop with the excuses already.

3 ft is still to much for a lot of schools to be able to go back FT. Our school could not be at max capacity and do 5 day. We currently do have teachers using multiple classrooms and kids going to class in random rooms not typically classrooms.

Hopefully it would be enough to get in kids off the waitlist though

Is APS much different than other school systems that are able to accommodate?

I actually think given many kids will still opt for remote learning, full-time, in-person can happen after spring break. It may just take some extra effort from the SB, which frankly, it's time for.

No idea. Our school is building for 400 and has almost 800..I am not aware of other schools and their capacity issues. I think FCCC and Loudon are both less crowded but I have no idea.

I am sure there are many schools where it could work in APS but I also think there are some where it can not..

I agree logtics should not be an excuse, but personally I am exhausted from hoping anything more can come from Duran or the school board. I'm hoping on a decent summer school option for those that need and want it, and full opening in the fall. We are a family with SN child that was not selected for 4 days despite IEP. We have had to hire DL support, and still have this support 3 days a week when DS not in person hybrid model so we can work. We think if our DS did not have IEP we would definitely have gone private and wouldn't have looked back. So no don't think APS will open unless power is taken from individual school districts.

APS threw in the towel last March and did zero instruction. If CDC approves 3 feet distancing for schools, it's time for APS to absolutely get kids back, in-person, full-time, ASAP. Every single day is adding to the learning loss thanks to the poor decisions made a year ago

Can they even fit all of the kids into the classroom with 3'? Some of those rooms aren't that big.

I’m not sure why you think that, Duran sent out an email no less than two days ago saying the model will not change at all for this school year. Period.

Especially in the older schools with high populations.
