Schools with an outdoorsy culture within 5-6 hours drive

Anonymous
DS is interested in a school with an outdoorsy culture. We have several far-away schools on our list (Pacific Northwest, Colorado) but I'd love to add some closer-to-home schools too.

We are looking at UNC Asheville.

Other suggestions? Thank you!

I went to VT, but I spent a whole year hanging out with the Outdoor Kids. The one who did all the hiking, mountain biking, kayaking. It was such a nice change of pace from the greek kids.

One advantage of a big school is you can almost always find someone who shares your enthusiasm for an activity. It was certainly driven by the fact that school is in the mountains too.

St. Mary’s College of MD in southern MD. Beautiful campus, outdoorsy, and small private feel for public tuition. Hidden gem.

JMU and Shenandoah University also have nice access to the mountains and students who take advantage of that.

I attended SMCM years ago. It is on the St. Mary’s River and, once you’ve completed a sailing training course, you can take the small sailboats out as available. They also have canoes and a small beach. Nice tree lined paths for jogging and biking. And lots of pick up stuff like frisbee golf.

Juniata-surrounded by woods and rivers. The drive there is mostly through farmland.

You can spend a semester living/studying in their field station on a large lake. The professors (and a chef!) travel to you there during the week.

+1. You can go all-in with a semester in the Adirondacks living in a yurt. Don’t forget your long-johns.

Radford for sure. Even has a major for people who want to work in parks and recreational tourism.
