| GOOD NEWS: Because of our strong fiscal management, and Virginians working so hard to mitigate #COVID19, we are projecting an additional $700 million in revenues over the current budget cycle—that means a permanent raise for teachers and additional relief for Virginia families. |
| Good grief. Normally I’d be happy about this...but with schools closed, this is insane. Voting Pete Snyder: open schools. |
| If this is true, that would be good news. |

I’ll take the relief. And I’m glad to pay for teachers to do small group remediation in person in classrooms this summer. To get SPeD kids extra hours. To get kinders into summer school in person for adjustment to school and literacy. To get HS in person in small groups for credit recovery. To double the number of s psychologists, counselors and social workers. To make classes smaller next year for remediation. So basically, I’m fine with paying all the teachers who say they would be glad to work 12 months if they could to work 12 months.
Interesting he wants to spend education funds on a freebie raise for teachers and not to help dig kids out of the enormous academic and social emotional hole they are in. It’s not like there is no other educational use for the money. I am not okay with handing out raises after listening to all the Karen’s who learned that having Job in a pandemic is hard. (Spoiler alert: everyone knew this. Many of us did it while also proctoring DL for 6 year olds. Only teachers behaved like toddlers coming down from a sugar high). Seriously. I will write letters, emails, raise money, donate and definitely vote on this. The unions have too much power. And it’s all about the teacher feels and 0.0% about the kids needs If teachers think DC or MD are so much better, go teach there. He’s always been a bit clueless, but wow did he pick a terrible time to try to ram raises through. Pops are still pissed about Kim Adams and vaccines. And NoVA hasn’t opened schools yet. He’s going to make it impossible for Dems to win next year. It’s a deal killer for me. Teachers getting vaccinated and still griping about going in? Nope. Not okay. |
| This is a very good thing. Schools have been balancing budgets at the expense of teachers for years. It’s time for teachers to start getting salary increases they’ve been promised for years. |
Teachers earn a salary competitive to. Feds when education and a 10 month work year are factored in. Before we pay teachers more, how about they give us a good faith effect, quit griping and at least try to teacher from a classroom. |
Teachers were doing that for years before the pandemic while having promised raises taken away. How about we square up those past years first and then talk about this year? |
Well, if you don’t want schools to start suffering a serious brain drain in the faculty, it would be a good idea not to play the dickering cheapo. Teachers are extremely underpaid for their level of education. |
Teachers probably endorsed and voted for Northam. Bonus is fine, perm raise is fine too. But can they get better leadership at Gatehouse and get the minority of teachers giving the others a bad name on board with getting them to do their teaching jobs faithfully? |
Your anger at schools being closed a) has expired , as they are opening this week and b) is misplaced as teachers had no say over that. This isn’t even a bonus or merit raise. It is truing up years of step freezes that are built into our salaries and are the first things to get cut. If you insist on never paying teachers what they’re worth, guess what: you will never get teachers worth a damn, or the ones worth a damn will find new careers. |
| This is great news! My Children’s teachers have done an amazing job during the pandemic and they deserve to get a salary increase. |
Teachers have nothing to do with who gets hired at district admin. None. |
| It will be good for retention. |
Which is important. |
| Isn't the deal that the county has to agree to match, and Fairfax County isn't going to? |
