Let's talk face oils

I juuuuust discovered face oil. I've always struggled to keep my skin moisturized in winter but avoided face oil because I have combination skin that has historically been pretty acne prone and it seemed like a bad idea.

But I finally tried it this winter after hearing a couple friends raving about it, and I love it! I started with an inexpensive one from Target (Botanics Facial Oil) and it's lovely. Not only is it keeping my skin more nourished but it gives me a nice flush and glow when I apply it so it helps with dullness too. I can wear it on its own or with a tinted CC cream over it and it's a great "no makeup" look. I've had a couple colleagues ask me if I went on a vacation they don't know about because I've got a vacation glow on video calls. I love it.

What do others use? I am going through the bottle I have fast and would be interested in trying something fancier. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the options.

I like Drunk Elephant Marula Oil a lot, but don’t know if it’s worth the price (I got a little sample bottle of it). I also love Nuxe oil, which is for anywhere—face, body, hair. Smells amazing, and is only $30 a bottle.

Hated the Drunk Elephant but love almost everything from Herbivore. Their Phoenix is a holy grail for a lot of people, but after trying them all I love Emerald. Have the CBD Emerald now and its wonderful.

Vintners daughter is pretty good.

I’ve tried DE Marula Oil. It’s okay. I prefer Triology Rose Hip oil. I’ve also read good things about Vintner’s Daughter.

Do most people use these at night or in the morning? I have been liking the morning application because it seems to kind of wake up my skin and give me some glow. I use a night cream in the evening and sometimes an overnight mask for moisturizing.

Wondering what the advantages of applying at night might be. I am not inclined to give up the glow it gives me during the day.

I only put on my face oil at night after I shower, but I don't see why you couldn't use it morning, evening, or both.

Huh. I was skeptical of the concept because "oil" is ususally something I want to avoid on my face. It went exactly as I expected when I tried it. My face just felt like I rubbed oil on it instead of washing it, and felt greasy. Maybe it's because the one I tried was Trader Joes?

Are you the one that recommended the Botanics oil on another thread? I bought it based on your post and I love it! I never thought I would put oil on my face but I noticed my skin becoming a lot more dry in my 30s.

Yes, I think that was me! I was similarly surprised by how much I've liked it and now I'm super hooked.

In retrospect, I think I just need to unlearn some stuff about skincare. I learned several years ago that oil is a much better way for me to moisturize the rest of skin. After years of dealing with scaliness on my shins and painfully dry skin in winter, I started using an oil-based cleanser in the shower and then applying oil daily and it's been so much better. But it took me a while to get used to the idea of doing the same on my face because I had acne as a teen and in my 20s and early 30s and was always taught to use oil-free anything and that oil would "clog pores". Now I'm starting to understand that it's really more about balance and that healthy skin can have lots of oil in it. It just has to be the right oil and needs to be balanced.

I use a couple from Target. Nourish Organic Pure Hydrating - Apricot & Argan Face Serum or Aura Cacia Organic Rosehip Skin Care Oil. Both are great.

I've also used a rose oil from Trader's Joes but did not like that one as much.

I apply my oil at night over moisturizer or mixed with it, and encounter a glow in the morning.

I also love oil in the winter before going out in the snow and wind (for example, skiing). Protective and nourishing.

I wonder if the oil would interfere with sunscreen.
