In hindsight, the #1 most important criteria we wish we had emphasized for them was -- what kind of place is most likely to make you intellectually curious, happy, and healthy? This is not always obvious when high school seniors are making their choices. The clearest example from our experience is geography. For our crew, it's CLEARLY better to spend four years in a place that you enjoy, rather than four years in a (higher-ranked, better known) place that you do not. For one of our kids, cold dark winters were just not a good thing. The second example is the student body mindset. It's CLEARLY better to spend four years in a collaborative environment, than four years in a (higher-ranked, better known) endless competitive pressure cooker. Don't underestimate how much mental health is a thing at their age. Anyway, to each their own, but that's our experience. Luckily we have a fourth kid in high school and can try to help him get it right.

Nice post. This is the real name of the game. Where will my student thrive? There is not just one place, but if you can figure out a handful or two and apply to those, you've done well in the search process.

We all know this. But since none of us know your kid, the point of *this* thread is to just pick. K? And it’s fine to have a personal opinion, but the thread is derailed by nonsense. Like that ND is an endless competitive pressure cooker, when that’s not the reputation at all. You can say, ” Davidson for me!” and it’s all good. But saying Davidson because it’s the better ranked derails us for three pages. It’s not better ranked.

Florida A&M is where the daughter of Gizelle, the real housewives of Potomac, is attending. Of course, not the reason to choose a college, but when I saw FAMU I remembered that. It's not a college that you often see discussed on these boards.

Denison attracts more mainstream frat types while Kenyon College is more liberal. Both are situated on a very attractive campus. Kenyon is the more academic of the two, but both are fine. May depend on the student's planned major.
