For parents with kids in charters, how have they navigated the whole DL situation?
Do you know of any that has opened or is doing a hybrid model? What has your experience been like at your charter during the pandemic? Even if they haven't opened yet, have they been good at communicating with parents about their reopening plans? Any deadlines set? If you can please name them, that will be valuable information for other parents as well. Thanks! |
CMI has been very good at communicating that leadership is in no rush to resume in person learning and they are prioritizing safety from covid over educational outcomes. They have quite convincingly argued that the majority of parents support this approach. |

Argued, or showed you that most parents support virtual as opposed to in person? We’re parents surveyed, and were those survey results shared? |

Here are the LEAs' plans: https://osse.dc.gov/publication/lea-continuous-education-plans
I believe that KIPP, Friendship, Meridian, Truth, and BASIS all have at least some students coming into their buildings, but I don't know whether they are getting direct education from teachers or whether it's a learning hub model where they are watching DL from the school building. |
I also heard Latin is prepping for Hybrid shortly. But that's second hand, so someone should confirm. |
KIPP's in person "Wednesday Workshop" - which is small groups, with a teacher, doing the same work as the online only kids - has been suspended since...November? because of an increase in COVID cases in the area. I don't know yet if the January session of in person activities will start up as scheduled next week, but I really hope it does. My child looked forward to it every week and has been very disappointed that its not happening. |
| Curious whether the possibility of vaccinating kids 16 and older will make a difference for high schools. |

LAMB has been making detailed plans to reopen late Jan or early Feb, including asking for commitment to hybrid or virtual for that date. Mundo Verde has plans to reopen on Feb 1.
If no other charters, or DCPS, do this, then I doubt they will follow through. |
has CMI ever cared about educational outcomes? |
Latin parent and I have heard nothing yet. |
Where did you see that MV plans to reopen on Feb 1? I am a MV parent and have not seen this come out in the parent bulletins. |
The current projected opening date is February 1 IF the current health metrics allow for it. But currently the case transmission rate is way too high. They had an update session in December (I think they called it an 'affinity session') where they outlined the decision matrix for opening. Based on what they outlined there, the case rate in DC is currently too high for them to open. The deck from that meeting was linked in one of the weekly emails toward the end of December. |
Case rate is third lowest in the country in DC. |
Exactly! Schools are open in other states... including Maryland and Virginia. DC students are at a disadvantage. |
