UVA possibility

My DC wants to apply RD. We live in DC. She attends a private school, has all As and 3 APs. SAT was only 1420 but didn't have opportunity to take it again to bring it up. She is on the track team, is involved in STEM clubs, and works on weekends at an animal shelter. She wants to go into STEM.

Would she have a chance at all being from DC and not VA?

Seems a bit light for an out of state applicant, but I’m no expert!

I’m guessing she’s not a URM?

OOS is possible but her odds would be better being in state.

ED would have had a better chance. EA had 29,000 apps so I’m not sure how RD will go this year

Only if applying from Roanoke or Lynchburg, not from NoVA.

She should apply, but she should have other schools in mind as well.

Not URM, correct. I wish we did leave in state, and not in NoVA so that she'd have a much better chance. Alas...

What is your take on submitting SAT scores? Would she be stronger leaving those out?

“Only 1420?” Why do parents put down their kids here!?! That’s a great score.

+1
DCUM is like a different universe. I can’t imagine saying “only” a 1420.

Don’t be obtuse PP. OP knows it’s a perfectly fine score, but also knows it’s a bit low for out of state into UVA. So that’s why she’s asking, obviously.

+1 It is a perfectly good score, but many more opportunities open up with 1450 and up.

Know a number of in-state kids who did not get into UVA with similar stats. I probably wouldn't submit a 1420. With test-optional, only students with high scores are going to submit. So a 1420 will be comparatively lower than previous years.

If looking for STEM, check out VA Tech. Would stand a much better chance of getting in there. Good luck!

75th percentile for UVA is 1520. So it's going to be a stretch. I say don't submit SAT.

Does an in-state student with similar SAT score / grades have a shot at RD? NOVA, so I'm guessing no, but would like confirmation.

STEM is board. Is she thinking about engineering? I'm by no means an expert, but I would think that could certainly help her chances.

UVA is filled with rednecks, rapists and drunk frat boys and their stem and cs programs are awful.
