cold weather workout gear

For those of you who are experienced at exercising outdoors in cold weather, do you have any recommendations for running/walking tights (WITH a pocket for the phone) or other gear that has really helped you. I hate the cold and have always gone to the gym when it's cold- warming up in the sauna first. When I go out into the cold to exercise I feel my whole body tighten up. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Merino gloves- you’ll want gloves long before you need really warm socks. Decent base layers help as well

Giving a bump since I have the same exact question!

Well, I'm still figuring this out to, as someone who used to do class-based workouts but has become a runner this year. But what's worked for me is wearing gloves, micro fleece leggings, and layering a long sleeve t-shirt under a down vest. So far I haven't needed to do warmer socks or a hat. The vest has been particularly helpful just to get me out the door when it's very cold or windy, because I can do a warm-up inside, zip up the vest, and it will keep my core warm until I've hit my stride. I usually have to unzip after a mile or so, but it gets the job done.

I am perpetually cold, but I've been impressed how with just a few clothing items and a commitment, I haven't done too poorly so far. I'm running less than I was in August, but that's typical for me with regards to workouts in general -- always harder to motivate in Nov/Dec when the days are so short. But I've committed to 3 days a week and stuck to it. Don't let the cold keep you down! We have the technology.

I think running with a phone in my pants is very awkward. I’d recommend getting a Flipbelt or similar.

There was another thread about this not too long ago: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/910248.page#18055845

I've found the key is finding very fitted leggings with the thigh pocket. I prefer it to both the arm band or the Flipbelt, which I've also tried. The leg pocket is the only one where the phone doesn't bounce around at all - it's completely flat to my leg and the pocket is really snug so it doesn't move at all. The only downside is that it's less accessible than on an armband, but since I usually just put on a podcast or playlist and go, it's usually not an issue.

Merino wool crew socks, UnderArmour cold gear, layers. Lightweight beanie and definitely gloves.

Mizuno has a new to me thing where some of their products heat up when they get wet (from sweat). I bought a balaclava.

I like fleece lined running tights. Sweaty Betty are my favorite, I have some from athleta that are not high enough rise, but that's probably the cut not the fabric. Smartwool running socks. Get moving and you'll be OK.

Target has running tights with pockets - good price. Worth a try

Fleece tights (mine are from Five Below, had them many years) under whatever you usually run in. I wear double socks on super cold days. Top is all about layering. 2 long/sleeve wick away shirts, with a fleece zip up over them. You can push up the fleece sleeves and/or unzip a little or a lot as you warm up. Hat, or fleece headband - for me it's about keeping my ears covered. And ski mittens are what I wear on my hands. If I can keep my hands, toes, and ears warm, I can do anything! I don't carry my phone, just a car key tied to my running shoe.

OMG, are you me? I used to love going to the gym in the winter and sitting in the sauna a good 5-10 min before my workout to warm up from the bitter cold.

Here is some bad news OP: working out outside in the freezing cold will probably be some degree of terrible no matter what you are wearing. It is for me at least.

No hat. Your head will sweat. I prefer an ear band. Plus touchscreen gloves.

I love my woolx leggings. So warm! They just came out with a pair with pockets.
