Safeties suggestion

DD has too many reach and match schools. I want her to choose a few more safeties

4.53 weighted (4.0 UW) with 1420 SAT.

Three 5s, three 4s and a 3 on AP exams to date (3 was in AP Bio). Taking AP calculus A/B (so a little off track due to mental reaction/depression to parents’ divorce sophomore year), DE Intl Relations, AP Physics, AP Psychology, AP Lit, AP Spanish this year.

Safeties are currently Christopher Newport and Miami University in Ohio.

Wants to maybe study medicine but also interested in political science.

You have told us nothing about your child. You have given us statistics. What is she like (as a human being, not an application packet)?

What activities does she enjoy? What is she drawn to (urban, rural? Big 10sports? Hiking? Political causes? Greek life?).

She has an excellent work ethic but is a people pleaser. She has a strong sense of social justice. She is an athlete (travel softball mainly) but doesn’t intend to play in college. Musician. Excellent writer. Wants to be in an urban/suburban location (which doesn’t make Miami the best choice). She is studying immersion language abroad this summer, assuming Covid is not out of control.

First, you can't "maybe" be premed and get into medical school. The kids who make it are those who are really committed. Has she volunteered orndone anything to explore her interest in medicine?

If she's serious about medicine, she should find a school with undergrad research opportunities in the life sciences.

She works as a PT tech and has shadowed surgeons. I personally don’t think she has the temperament for it but...

What schools would you recommend with these opportunities?

How is AP Calculus off track? I am confused. My DC goes to a Big 3 private, so APs are minimal and being eliminated. I thought AP Calculus senior year is right where you would want to be?!

It’s A/B rather than B/C. Sophomore year she was taking algebra 2 and trig and ended up checking out mentally during the trig section so counselors demoted her to just algebra 2. That put her a half step behind the track she had been on.

Following this thread - I have a really similar sounding kid! who also needs another 1 or 2 safeties, urban/suburban, some life science opportunities possibly, similar stats..

Hoping someone comes up with some!

I think Pitt is a good fit for this, strong sciences, rolling admissions, seems a safety, in urban area.

Indiana, Wisconsin, Tulane

^Tulane is no safety with an acceptance rate in the teens and massive yield protection of high-stats applicants who fail to show sufficient demonstrated interest.

OP, need more on preferred sizes, geographic regions, location (urban, suburban, rural), financial considerations.

I bet OP's kid is in a public school. There are A LOT of kids taking Calc BC in junior/senior years in public. Mine too B/C as a junior and multi-variable senior year.

Many privates are getting rid of them because forces them into a discussion of public vs private AP results. They are trying to avoid that discussion by saying "we are about "deep" learning" excuse.
