Vassar? Mt. Holyoke? St Mary's College of MD? Franklin and Marshall? College of Wooster? St. Olaf's? Pitt is a good safety if she is open to large state schools.
Some of those are not urban, I will admit. But all strong for Science. Vassar has a train into Manhattan. Mt. Holyoke has a free shuttle to Smith, Amherst, UMass. St. Olaf's is great for music. Good luck to her. Sounds like a great kid. |
NOT TRUE. Medical schools are always looking for students who have studied "something else". Be it math, Spanish, they also love people who have done other careers for a bit like elementary education. If you are a male applicant who was a first grade teacher, you're in as long as the grades are good. She just has to take the required science course AND DO WELL IN THEM, and have no grades lower than a B, and a GPA of 3.7 or above. |

Sounds like you are in VA so I'd add VCU if really want to pursue medicine. It's very strong in health sciences.
For the political science/international interest -- University of Delaware. Great study-abroad program (look up World Scholars) and strong in political science. Merit aid makes it comparable in price to in-state VA. |
| A number of the more-rigorous local private schools are eliminating AP classes. They announced it as a cohort, I guess so no one would be at a disadvantage. The reasoning is that their regular classes are already college-level, and they can be more flexible and creative with the curriculum if they ditch the standardized AP fare. (Less memorization, more Harkness discussions and papers, for example.) The kids can still take the exams if they want. My DS scored a 5 on APUSH, for instance, taking non-AP US History and with no additional prep. |
This is interesting. Thank you! Our public school's regular classes are not college-level, to say the least, lol. So I don't expect that trend where I am. We have open enrollment and a bunch of kids signing up for AP classes they can't handle. Not sure why the school encourages/allows this. |
OP please don’t hijack my thread. It’s not relevant if private schools do away with APs. No one cares. To other who have made suggestions, thanks. College of Wooster was on my list for her but it was too rural, I think. She doesn’t like VCU but agree it’s good for medicine. What do people know about Davidson or Dennison? |
| Lehigh, but be sure to show demonstrated interest if she applies. |
Davidson is no one's safety, but a good school. Denison would be a match/safety. PP at 10:24 had some good ideas. |
I asked PP to clarify because I had never heard that. You would neverrrrrrrrrrrrrr do such a thing and act in your own self-interest or curiosity for even a moment! You are super selfless, I can tell! FYI people care a heck of a lot more about privates eliminating APs then where your kid applies to college. |
Feel free to start your own thread about that then. Don’t hijack mine. I mean, I could see why people would be upset to be paying tuition to schools that can’t even be bothered to offer AP classes and have some concern that the competitive advantage they perceive over public schools that do may be eroding, but that isn’t the topic of my thread. |
| Then shut up about it. |
| George Washington. Georgetown. |
| As a potential match school with strong STEM programs in an urban area (similar to Pitt), take a look at the University of Minnesota. |
|
Pitt is an excellent recommendation, especially for their Health Sciences programs but if she didn't like VCU I'm not sure she'll like Pitt. Franklin & Marshall is a good option. If she's ok with being a bit further away from a city, Dickinson would be a good option particularly if she likes politics and social justice issues. Other options are Trinity College (Hartford), Providence College and Loyola MD. Vassar and Davidson are definitely not safeties. It is a bit difficult to make other recommendations without knowing what schools she already likes (her reaches and matches). Does she have a geographical location that she prefers?

Good god op. You started this thread doesn’t mean you can control people having discussions. Let people talk! |
