Please suggest dog breed for us!

Anonymous
hi everyone,

Could you please suggest a few breeds that would be ideal for us: smaller sized dog that does not shed too much, does not bark too much, is good with kids (8-9 year old active boys), who is not crazy active, i.e. does not require 2-3 hours of walk every day and would be ok living in an apartment setting.

Thank you!

A mixed breed dog from a rescue or pound.

An adult beagle, if someone is home in the apartment during the day, would be great. Not a puppy. A dog over 3 years.

Mini-schnauzers! My parents have two—they are the best and match exactly what you describe.

Beagles don’t bark, but they do howl. A lot. At least the ones I knew did. They’re cute, but it made
Me never want a beagle.

+1, dog from a foster home. From your post, you are looking for an adult dog who has calmed down a bit. Because the dog is an adult, you will know it's size, whether it's good with kids, etc. It might be housebroken.

Dogs are individuals, there is no breed that universally doesn't bark much.

There are websites out there where you enter all this info and a few breeds pop up. Google it.

I've had several miniature schnauzers. They don't shed and aren't crazy active, but they bark a lot.

Ah, guess they got lucky with these then. I wasn't familiar with the breed before.

Cavapoo. Ours barks a bit, but he’s nine pounds of hypoallergenic laziness.

I'm still a fan! My favorite one used to lay on the top of the couch back, like a cat. Unfortunately, it was so she could see out the window and bark at people passing by.

To be completely honest, OP's list of requirements makes me think she's not ready for a dog. They're not going to disappear into the background until you want to take them out to play. They need exercise, they'll have their own personalities, barking is the way that dogs communicate and not a negative trait, shedding is part of the deal when you have a dog or cat. It's fine to say you want a dog with lower or higher exercise needs, or that would be comfortable in a smaller space or okay without a fenced yard, but once a week there's someone asking for the Unicorn Dog Breed that isn't really a dog unless your kids need a companion, and it comes to life for that period of time and disappears from mind until your kid is bored again.
